Tips For Dealing With Personal Finance Problems - ProjectPB ? The ...

An individual?s personal financial situation can cause a lot of worry and stress. Some people know how to keep their finances in good order, but others have a hard time. Even though some have it easier or more money to work with, everyone can have a good financial life if we just know how to. Use this article to learn new approaches to effective money management.

While you may not be happy in your current job, it?s better to have an income than none at all. Don?t quit your job until you have another one lined up.

Try to get bargains on pillows, sheets and covers. Such stores often sell high quality items at a fraction of the cost. You will notice improvements in your personal finances with just a bit of research.

TIP! Little things can make a surprising difference over time when you are trying to save money. Giving up your morning coffee, daily candy bar or even soda can add up over the year.

Be careful to think about your ability to repay when considering a large student loan for your education. Going to expensive private schools when you are unsure of what major to take could cause you a lot in the long run.

Talk to your bank to see if you can set up a plan that automatically transfers money into your savings account every month. Set up an automatic account if you find it hard to put some money aside. This is a great way to get money saved up for future plans, such as a family vacation or a wedding.

Safe Manner

One surefire way to keep your finances in order is to avoid racking up credit card debt. Before you decide to use a credit card, think very carefully. Think about the length of time a particular purchase will take in order to be paid. If it will take you in excess of one month to fully pay and the item is something you can live without anyway, leave it in the store.

TIP! Your FICO score is effected largely by credit cards. The higher your credit card balances are, the more of a negative impact they will have on your score.

You need to have a way to dispose old financial documents in a safe manner. This is why you should purchase a shredder. Identity thieves can obtain access to your bank account and credit card information from improperly disposed documents. Ensure your data safety by disposing of all your documents in a safe manner.

Make concrete financial plans to ensure your personal finances are managed effectively. This plan will encourage you to stay on track, and stop you when you become a spendthrift.

Making Presents

Be vigilant for mail from credit card companies that inform you about changes to your account. The law says that they have to let you know 45 days ahead of time. You must decide if you will be keeping the account after the changes. If not, pay it off and close it!

TIP! Remember to save money before spending it. If you go forward, expecting you will simply save the remainder for each month, you will be encountered by a surprise known as ?reality?.

Try making presents instead of spending all of your money on them for Christmas. Not only could you save lots of money, you could also avoid the hassle of holiday-time shopping. Applying a little creativity when making presents can help you save money.

Setting your bank account to automatically withdraw a set amount of funds into a high-interest savings account can be a good idea. At first, this may be uncomfortable, but after a few months, you?ll treat it like another bill and your savings will grow to an impressive amount in no time.

When you are trying to save some money abroad, eat at local restaurants. The restaurants in your hotel and in the area surrounding it are going to be overpriced, so find out where local people eat. This is a great way to find authentic food at a budget-friendly price.

Do not think you are saving money by not doing maintenance on your vehicle or home. By keeping these personal assets in good condition with the proper upkeep, you minimize the risk of having to make a major repair down the road. In the long view, taking proper care of your possessions is going to save you more money.

TIP! A yard sale is a great way to get rid of old items while earning you some extra cash. Let all of the neighbors know about the upcoming garage sale ? one might even offer to sell items for them in exchange for a small commission.

In conclusion, it is crucial to keep finances in check. It?s not always easy, but it is simple. By applying the information we share here, you will become better able to order your personal finances.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A new pastor has taken over as the spiritual leader of 1 of Montgomery's most historic churches.

The Rev. Cromwell Handy is the new pastor of Montgomery's Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. It's the church from where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. helped lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports (http://on.mgmadv.com/Tx0N83) Dexter Avenue is the first church for Handy to serve as pastor. He says he understands the historical significance of the position.

But he said the downtown Montgomery Church has many of the same problems as other houses of worship. Those include dealing with the needs of an aging congregation and bringing young members into the church.

Handy had a long career working for the Internal Revenue Service and has served in various pastoral positions.

    Iran's president dismisses health minister

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranian state TV is reporting the country's president has dismissed the health minister after her ministry put out a statement criticizing authorities for not providing money to import medicine.

The Thursday report says Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has replaced Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi, the sole female member of the Cabinet, by a temporary caretaker.

Last week her ministry in a statement said the Central Bank had not allocated a budget to import medicine, but provided hard currency for importing pet food, horse saddles and dog collars.

The country faces a hard currency shortage linked to the West's oil and banking sanctions on Iran. This has in turn fueled the political struggle between Ahmadinejad and his critics, in particular hardliners aligned with the clerical establishment.

Parliamentarians have also accused Ahmadinejad of underfunding medicine.

13 Resolutions To Make You A Better, More Productive Writer In 2013

We?ve all been burned by New Year?s resolutions. Otherwise, we?d have statuesque physiques, shelves lined with our best sellers, and pools full of cash instead of hangovers, unfinished manuscripts, and maxed-out credit cards. Most of us have failed so many times that even the words ?New Year?s resolution? elicit shame and fury. (Or maybe that?s just me, but I sure hope not. Schadenfreude is the best.)

That?s why I?m not asking you to make a resolution for 2013. I am, however, asking you to make a resolution for January of 2013. On February 1, you can go right back to your old ways. But you won?t. See, resolving to change for all eternity is as daunting as skydiving from space (I mean, did you see that guy?), but resolving to change for one month is manageable. Reasonable even. And in most cases, it?s all you need. It takes an average of 21 days for a new habit to stick. January has 31, so get through the month and you?re golden, with room to spare.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.?
    ?Aristotle

Resolving to change for all eternity is as daunting as skydiving from space, but resolving to change for one month is manageable. It takes an average of 21 days for a new habit to stick. January has 31, so get through the month and you?re golden.

I used to think that whole three-weeks-to-a-new-habit thing was rubbish, but in September I decided I was sick of talking about getting fit and failing. I signed up for a four-week boot camp, telling myself, ?It?s just four weeks. You can do anything for four little weeks.? I purposely avoided making huge promises about marathons and Olympic gold. At that point, I enjoyed exercise about as much as deer enjoy having their heads lopped off to be displayed on some hunter?s den wall. So, like, not at all. After my third week, in a move that mystifies even me, I signed up for six more months of boot camp. The habit was in place, and it didn?t seem so intimidating anymore. Today, brutal workouts are just part of my day. No big. If you knew me, that?d blow your mind. In 2013, I?m going to use the same method to work on my writing goals. One month at a time. One thing at a time. I think you should join me because if a desk potato like me can be turned into someone who enjoys working out then, trust me, you can do anything.

For starters, don?t think of the New Year as a time to do a massive overhaul on your life. That?s overwhelming and likely to end in tears and swearing. Think of it, instead, as a clean slate that gives you permission to stop beating yourself up for the failures of 2012. You didn?t finish the novel, enter that writing contest, take any classes, whatever. It doesn?t matter now. Let it go. Face forward, brave soldier. Self-doubt and guilt are among a writer?s worst enemies. It?s time to stop hoping and start working.

Here are 13 resolutions to consider for January 2013 if you?re ready to be a better, more productive writer, and some tips to make them work for you?

    1. I will write X minutes a day or write X words a day

Make your goals as specific as possible. Vague ?I?ll write more? kind of resolutions are way too easy to fudge. ?Uh, yeah, I wrote more today. More than that one time I wrote my initials in the snow with pee.? That?s why giving yourself a specific number of minutes or words to hit every day is a great way to spend January. Yeah, every day. All of them. Consistency is the magic behind establishing new habits. It?s just four weeks. You?ve got this.

Start with something that you can definitely sustain for a month. If you haven?t been writing regularly, don?t start with 5,000 words or nine hours a day. (It?s not that you can?t do it, but it might be that you can?t do it YET.) You need a win here. Start as low as you need to; 500 words or half an hour a day is still more than zero words and zero minutes, and at the end of January, you will have kicked out 15,500 words or written for fifteen and a half hours. Boom! Sense of achievement! If, at the end of the month, you?ve consistently written every day, you?ll be excited about stepping it up a notch in February.

    2. I will start writing at X o?clock every day

Here?s the thing about developing a habit: While you?re trying to cement it into your life, there?s no room for flexibility or for giving yourself a break just this once. This resolution is good for that reason. After a month of writing at the same time every day, your muse will start to understand when to show up. Sometimes she'll be out posing for art students, trying to make some extra cash, and you've still got to work on those days. But most of the time she'll be there. Create a trigger to remind yourself that it?s time to put pen to paper: set an alarm, train your dog to attack your crotch, put the coffee pot on a timer, whatever it takes. Experts in habit-forming swear by triggers.

    3. I will finish a chapter in my novel

Look, you could go balls to the wall and resolve to finish your novel, but breaking that down into smaller goals is much more likely to result in high fives and celebratory toasts. A shopaholic should resolve to put $20 in the piggy bank, not $2,000. A couch potato should resolve to run around the block, not to run a marathon. The same goes for writers. Tiny steps are better than no steps. Add up enough chapters, and you?ll end up with a novel anyway. It?s just a less terrifying approach.

    4. I will read X books per week

Again, put a number on it. How many books exactly equal success? This one is a less direct path to improving your writing, but no less important. Good writers are avid readers. There?s an undeniable correlation. Like most of these resolutions, you need to ask yourself why it?s not something you?re currently doing. Most likely, the answer is that you don?t have time. Unless you're a time-bending wizard (and if so, is writing really the career path for you?), the number of hours in the day isn't going to change just because you want to do a bit more reading. You need to make some decisions. Where is the time going to come from? Don?t think of it as adding a new habit. Think of it as replacing an old one. You?ll need to spend less time doing something else in order to spend more time reading (or writing). What?s that something going to be? Figure that out before you start. Spend less time watching television, using Facebook, Bigfoot hunting, or whatever?s sucking up hours you could spend reading or writing. That leads us to?

    5. I will minimize other commitments in order to focus on writing

Your schedule will get stacked with as many blog posts, unpaid writing gigs (to get your name out there, of course), volunteer projects, social events, household obligations, leisure activities, and goth costume balls as you allow it to. If your priority is writing, make a conscious decision to truly make it a priority in January. Look at your current commitments. Figure out what you can cut out to make more time in the day, and learn to say no when you need to. Nobody?s gonna hate you for working hard to achieve your dreams, and if they do, they sort of suck anyway.

    6. I will submit X stories for publication

Make your goals as specific as possible. Vague ?I?ll write more? kind of resolutions are way too easy to fudge.

The important thing about this particular resolution is that you need to redefine success so you don?t get frustrated. In this case, success has nothing to do with whether the pieces you submit are met with rejection or publication. If you actually send the appropriate number of polished stories with good query letters to publications, you win. I don?t need to rehash all those stories about world-famous authors who could wallpaper their homes in rejection notes for you to understand that this industry is all about persistence. Go buy some stamps.

    7. I will improve my writing space

An ergonomic desk is a productive desk. There are lots of factors to take into consideration, from height of your monitor and proper chair dimensions to placement of your mouse and position of your feet. This chart uses your height and several other factors to diagram the ideal set up for you and Lifehacker has more tips. While you?re at it, remove distractions. The television? Cage of dancing hamsters? Desk clutter? It?s all got to go.

    8. I will limit my use of social media and/or non-essential internet to X minutes per day

Speaking of distractions, let?s talk about the internet. For most people, there is no bigger time suck. It is like having a beeping file cabinet full of baby animal pictures, porn, and notes from friends next to your desk while you try to work. Oh, and the information you need to research your book is somewhere in there too, so good luck with that. If this is your January resolution, you could try software that blocks distracting sites or sheer willpower, but if you?re serious, you need to remove temptation entirely. If possible, disconnect the internet from the computer you use for writing. I don?t mean turning the AirPort off on your Mac, because you?re still only two clicks away from the circus that is the Internet. I mean making it pretty much impossible to connect without some serious effort. Have a friend change your WiFi password to something you?ll never guess. If you have, say, a desktop and a laptop, disconnect the desktop from the internet and write with it. Then use the laptop when you need to research, check email, or read LitReactor. The more inconvenient it is to get to the wonders of the web, the better off you?ll be. Set a timer to keep yourself in check when you?re on Facebook. Again, it?s only four weeks.

    9. I will take a writing course

Signing up and committing to a writing course, whether here on LitReactor or at some in-person facility near you, will give you structure, deadlines, and perhaps most importantly, people who will hold you accountable and expect something of you on the regular. An accountabili-buddy if you will. Whatever your goal, it will help tremendously to have someone who is expecting something of you. It works with any of these. If you aim to write X words per day, have someone (preferably someone who is unwilling to listen to your rationalizations and excuses) see if you?ve met your goal at the end of the week. Let them know that if you?ve failed to meet the goal, they have your permission to pour a pitcher of eggnog onto you and your freshly laundered sheets whilst you sleep. You?re only going to let that happen once.

    10. I will submit X stories to a workshop

Maybe your work isn?t ready to submit to a publisher. Or maybe you?re not sure if it?s ready. If you?ve been writing with no feedback from the outside world, your self-doubt or self-confidence can bounce around your brain until it multiplies tenfold and you?ve lost touch with reality. Submitting your work to the LitReactor workshop or to a local writers group that you meet with in person will provide you with a reality check. It can be unnerving?nay, terrifying?to show your work to others for the first time; just remember to aim for progress, not perfection.

    11. I will do a public reading

Resolutions work best when they are tied to consequences. If you?ve been shying away from reading your work in public, decide on a reward if you follow through and punishment if you don?t. Commit to them. If you know that chickening out again will mean listening to six hours of Skrillex?s ?Bangarang? on repeat while an angry monkey throws feces at you, you?re going to read your damn story, particularly if doing so will earn you that new jacket or iWhatever you?ve been eyeing.?

    12. I will fix a weakness in my writing

Is there a particular grammatical issue that plagues your writing? Do you spell like a six-year-old on a sugar high? Do you overuse a particular word or phrase? Could your vocabulary be expanded? Identify your weakness then spend the month overcoming it. Chart your progress in some visual way?a gold star on the calendar for every day you catch and avoid a particular error, a line chart of the number of misspelled words per thousand words, one of those color-in thermometer drawings sales people use that denotes the number of words you?ve added to your vocabulary this month. Any kind of visual representation of progress will remind you to keep going.

    13. I will exercise more

This is one of those indirect ways to improve your writing. As writers, we spend way too much time hunched over keyboards and sitting on our asses. You don?t have to go hardcore Crossfit here, but adding a bit of movement to your day will clear your head and open you up to new ideas, improve your mood, and generally make you a more productive writer. Tell a few key people what you?re up to and how you?re progressing so that they can support you when you?re doing well and shame you into getting back on the wagon when you fall off.

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man."
    ?Benjamin Franklin

As for me, I resolve to minimize other commitments, write a minimum of 1,000 words daily, finish a chapter of my novel, and read three books during January. So who's with me, and what's your January 2013 resolution?

South Africa: Mandela rests at home

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The doctors treating former South African leader Nelson Mandela believe he should remain in Johannesburg for now to be close to medical facilities that can provide care to the 94-year-old, the government said Thursday.

Mandela left a hospital Wednesday evening after nearly three weeks of treatment there, and was brought to his home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton. The anti-apartheid icon, also known by his clan name, Madiba, has lived over the past year and more in the rural village of Qunu in Eastern Cape province, where he grew up.

"Where Madiba goes, in which period, in which times, is a matter that is entirely dependent on his own wishes. Whatever he wishes, we will do," presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said in an interview with eNCA, a South African television news channel.

"But right now, the doctors have considered it necessary and good that he should be in Houghton so that he's close to all the facilities where we can give him high care," Maharaj said.

Mandela was admitted Dec. 8 to a hospital in the South African capital of Pretoria, 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Johannesburg. The ex-president was treated for a lung infection and also had a procedure to remove gallstones.

"He is not yet fully recovered but he sufficiently moved forward so that he can be discharged," Maharaj said. He noted that Mandela had been in good spirits while receiving President Jacob Zuma and other visitors while he was hospitalized.

"Madiba was doing well, but as you know, when you're recovering there are ups and downs, slight ups and downs, and the doctors are looking for a steady progress and that began to be registered over the last few days," the spokesman told eNCA.

Mandela is revered around the world as a symbol of sacrifice and reconciliation, his legacy forged in the fight against apartheid, the system of white minority rule that imprisoned him for 27 years. The Nobel laureate served one five-year term as president after South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994.

Maharaj said Mandela is able to see his family "more easily" now that he is at home, but he appealed to the public to respect the former president's privacy "to allow the best possible conditions for his full recovery."

Affleck won't be running for Senate

Those hoping the United States Senate may get a little less gray and a bit more celebrity-studded won't be getting their Christmas miracle today.

Despite speculation, Ben Affleck announced late Monday he would not go after John Kerry's Senate seat in his native Massachusetts if the senator is confirmed as secretary of state.

The actor, who has been an increasingly popular presence in the political world recently, wrote on his Facebook page: "I love Massachusetts and our political process, but I am not running for office."

Chatter around a possible run went into overdrive Sunday when during an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation" the Cambridge native decidedly did not rule it out saying, "One never knows. I'm not one to get into conjecture."

In the post he mentions his charity work in the Congo, something he discussed on ABC's This Week as well as testifying before Congress, as one of the reasons he's not interested in entering Bay State politics.

"Right now it's a privilege to spend my time working with Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI), supporting our veterans, drawing attention to the great many who go hungry in the U.S. everyday and using filmmaking to entertain and foster discussion about issues like our relationship to Iran," Affleck said.

The movie star added his praise of Kerry, writing: "We are about to get a great Secretary of State."

"There are some phenomenal candidates in Massachusetts for his Senate seat. I look forward to an amazing campaign," Affleck added.

As for some of those candidates on the list, Gov. Deval Patrick is likely to appoint a replacement to fill Kerry's seat in the interim period. Former Massachusetts governor and Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, as well as Vicki Kennedy, the widow of Ted Kennedy, are on Patrick's list, according to reports.

Scott Brown, who lost to Elizabeth Warren in November, is widely believed to be the likely Republican nominee and is viewed as a strong contender. On the Democratic side there are several names often mentioned currently in the U.S. House of Representatives: Edward Markey, Michael Capuano, and Stephen Lynch. Other possibilities include Martha Coakley, the state attorney general who originally lost to Brown in the 2010 special election held after Kennedy's death, which Brown won.

Patrick has said he won't appoint anyone until Kerry is confirmed at state.

ABC News' Elizabeth Hartfield contributed to this report.

Lakers Beat Knicks 100-94 To Get To .500

LOS ANGELES ? The pieces of the puzzle that have been the Lakers' confounding season so far are starting to fall into place.

Kobe Bryant engineered a second-half comeback, the defense stepped up, and Los Angeles beat the New York Knicks 100-94 on Tuesday, extending its winning streak to five games.

"We're .500," a smiling Dwight Howard said. "We did it on Christmas, too. I knew this day would come."

Bryant scored 34 points in his NBA-record 15th Christmas Day game and Metta World Peace added 20 points and seven rebounds while defending Carmelo Anthony, whose 34 points led the Knicks. Anthony said he hyperextended his left knee, but expects to play on Wednesday in Phoenix.

Bryant, the league's leading scorer, has topped 30 or more points in nine straight games.

"If you're going to play on Christmas, it's always better to win. Makes it all worthwhile," said Bryant, who would soon hop a flight to Denver, getting there ahead of the Nuggets, who played the Clippers in the other half of the holiday doubleheader at Staples Center.

The Lakers improved to 14-14 ? 9-9 under new coach Mike D'Antoni ? and upped their holiday record to 21-18, including 13-9 at home. They returned to .500 for the first time since they were 8-8 on Nov. 30.

"It's so early in the season to have turned a corner," Bryant said. "We have everybody in the lineup and we're starting to see how we want to play."

The Knicks controlled most of the game behind Anthony and J.R. Smith, who had 24 points. But they struggled offensively in the fourth, when Anthony was limited to seven points and Smith had five as the Lakers' defense clamped down. World Peace fouled out with 1:58 to play and the Lakers ahead by four.

World Peace credited his defense on Anthony to "old-school basketball."

"I'm back in shape and it's a little tough to guard me," he said.

Steve Nash said: "This is what he's been doing all year. He gets his hands on a lot of balls, pounds on the other team's best guy. You can't win without that type of effort."

Smith's 3-pointer pulled New York to 96-94. After Pau Gasol made one of two free throws, Smith missed another 3 that would have tied the game at 97 with 32 seconds left.

"We missed a lot of easy shots, a lot of little chippers around the basket, shots that we normally make," Anthony said. "There were some plays that we thought should have went our way down the stretch, but for the most part, we fought. I'll take this effort any night. If we continue to play with this effort, we'll win a lot of games."

With Bryant double-teamed, Nash passed to Gasol, who dunked with 12 seconds to go, punctuating a win that sent Lakers fans, frustrated by the team's struggles and coaching change, home happy. The Lakers avenged a 116-107 loss in New York on Dec. 13.

A smiling Howard called Gasol's driving slam "a submarine dunk because he was very low to the ground."

Gasol responded, "I don't dunk as often as I used to so it felt good. I took it right down the lane and finished strong."

Nash had 16 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in his second game in nearly two months. He missed 24 straight games while recovering from a small fracture in his lower left leg. Howard had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Gasol had 13 points and eight rebounds.

"It was an important win for us as we were a little bit desperate," Nash said. "We've gone through a lot since Mike Brown ? new coach, new offense. It's been a difficult transition."

Bryant had eight of the Lakers' first 10 points to open the fourth during a run that provided their first lead since the opening quarter in a game matching the two teams that have played the most on Christmas Day.

They took the lead for good on Bryant's basket with 7:38 remaining. Anthony and Tyson Chandler were in foul trouble in the fourth, with Chandler fouling out late.

"They just were a little bit more aggressive," Anthony said. "Kobe got it going and Steve Nash hit some big shots down the stretch. When you have a guy like Nash doing that, it's kind of tough. Those guys know how to play. They've been waiting for Steve Nash to get back, so it's just a matter of then sticking it out until he did."

The Knicks opened the third on a 15-5 run, with Anthony setting up on the perimeter and hitting two 3-pointers as part of his 10 points that stretched their lead to 61-53. His jumper provided the Knicks' largest lead of the game, 69-60.

Bryant and Nash ignited the quiet atmosphere by leading a 17-9 run that drew the Lakers to 78-77 going into the fourth. They combined to score 15 points, although Bryant missed two free throws to end the third that would have given the Lakers their first lead since early in the game.

The Knicks' earlier roll dissolved in missed shots and a technical on Chandler for arguing a call.

"We were more determined, fought for everything," Nash said about the second half.

World Peace scored 16 points in the second quarter, including eight in a row, when the Lakers played catch-up most of the way. His 3-pointer gave the Lakers their first lead of the period with 1:10 remaining. Smith tied it up with a free throw before Nash's jumper sent the Lakers into halftime leading 51-49.

"We're playing really well together," World Peace said. "Kobe is really playing excellent now. He's still being aggressive on the offensive end, but he's giving everybody a chance to be aggressive. Pau is making strong, aggressive moves."

Bryant scored the Lakers' final nine points of the first quarter to give them a 25-23 lead. D'Antoni's plan of having Darius Morris guard Anthony didn't last long after he scored five of the Knicks' first seven points.

"I thought he'd get warmed up before he started firing," World Peace said.

NOTES: Bryant surpassed Oscar Robertson as the league's all-time Christmas Day scorer with 383 points. Robertson had 377. ... Knicks F/C Amare Stoudemire shot some before the game. He's been out all season after left knee surgery. "I'm not quite there yet, but I'm making progress," he said. "I've just got to stay patient and stay ready. We've been doing extremely intense work, as far as cardio." ... Knicks C Marcus Camby had four points and four rebounds in 8 minutes. He's been sidelined by a sore left foot and barely played this season. ... Asked about Bryant as an MVP candidate, D'Antoni said, "You can't put anybody MVP if you're below .500." ... In their only other Christmas Day meeting in 1963, the Lakers beat the Knicks 134-126 behind 47 points by Jerry West and 27 from Elgin Baylor. ... Nash said the gift bags in their lockers with the tag, "From Kobe Merry Xmas 2012" contained headphones. "Can't ever have enough," he said. ... The Lakers were all in white, while the Knicks were all in orange down to their socks in a color similar to Syracuse. ... Among the celebs holidaying at Staples Center were Rihanna and Chris Brown, Adam Levine, Samuel L. Jackson, George Lopez and Richard Lewis. Vanessa Bryant and her two young daughters sat courtside opposite the Lakers bench.

The Yale Law Journal Online: A Defense of Immigration ...

    posted by Yale Law Journal

The Yale Law Journal Online has just published A Defense of Immigration Enforcement Discretion: The Legal and Policy Flaws of Kris Kobach?s Latest Crusade, an essay by David A. Martin.?The essay disputes the legal claims set forth in a recent lawsuit that seeks to invalidate a policy of the Department of Homeland Security. The policy gives protection against deportation to unauthorized immigrants who came to the country as children, and the Department defends it as an exercise of prosecutorial discretion. The plaintiffs claim that no such discretion exists, because the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended in 1996, requires that virtually all aliens who entered without inspection be detained and placed in removal proceedings whenever encountered by immigration agents. Closely examining the statutory language and drawing on the author?s own extensive involvement as General Counsel of the Immigration and Naturalization Service in the 1996 consideration of legislative amendments and administrative implementation, the essay makes the case that the plaintiffs? argument misunderstands both Congress?s intent and consistent agency practice before and after those amendments.

10 things you never knew about the North Pole

    17 hrs.

Say "North Pole" and most people think of Santa, but did you know that the region is a hotbed for international intrigue? Or that it has a special connection to the unicorn? Just in time for Christmas, here are 10 fun facts about the most mythical place on earth.

There's more to the North Pole than just snow and Santa. Ever since it was discovered by Robert E. Peary, Matthew Henson, and four Eskimo companions back in 1909, the North Pole has been a place of international intrigue???did you know several countries are now fighting over vast underground oil reserves in the Arctic Circle? You can go see for yourself with expedition voyages or even spend the night in a hotel made entirely of ice???try the IceHotel in Jukkasj?rvi, Sweden, or stay overnight at the Aurora Ice Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska, for a unique twist on the average igloo.?

Here, 10 more facts about the North Pole that may surprise you:

    There are two North Poles
Unlike the South Pole, which lies over the continent of Antarctica, there is no land beneath the North Pole but more of a floating Arctic ice sheet that expands during colder months and shrinks to half its size in the summer. To complicate things even more, there are two different definitions of the North Pole. The first is the north magnetic pole, which is, quite literally, a magnetic phenomenon which changes daily depending on changes under the Earth's crust. Additionally, there is a north terrestrial pole, which is the fixed point that references the top of the Earth. Regardless of how you define the North Pole, global warming continues to be a problem here???as the polar ice caps melt, the sea levels rise, eliminating the land that polar bears and other wildlife depend on for survival.?

It's at the center of an international controversy right now
Did you know 30 percent of the world's untapped oil reserves are located in the Arctic Circle? The U.S. Geological Survey says that amount could actually be higher, since so much of the region has yet to be explored. Complicating matters is the fact that multiple countries lay claim to the Arctic Circle???Russia, Canada, Norway, Denmark (via Greenland), and the United States (via Alaska). Each country is allowed to explore potential oil reserves within 200 miles of their coastlines, but in 2007, Russia used a mini-submarine to plant the country's flag on the floor of the Arctic Ocean in an attempt to claim the region and its natural resources, a move that was rejected by the U.N. as the countries continue to work toward a solution.?

    The North Pole has seasons
Just like everywhere else on Earth, the temperature varies here depending on the time of year. The North Pole is warmest in July, if by warm you mean it's actually freezing???32 degrees. If that gives you the shivers, brace yourself. Temperatures in February drop to a bone-chilling 31 degrees below zero. The amount of light each day depends on the time of year, too. Alaska as well as Norway and the other Arctic Circle countries each face six months of broad daylight and six months of almost total darkness because of the angle at which this top portion of the Earth receives sunlight.?

    More from Budget Travel:

Yet, it is not the coldest place in the world
It might come as a shock, but even with temperatures with a high of just 32 degrees, the North Pole is not the coldest place on Earth. The South Pole is (in winter temperatures average -76 degrees F). Unlike the North Pole, the South Pole sits on top of a thick sheet of ice, which in turn sits on top of a piece of land???Antarctica. At more than 9,000 feet above sea level, Antarctica is also the world's tallest continent. The North Pole, on the other hand, is made up of a thin Arctic ice sheet that sits barely a foot above sea level???a fact that allows the landscape to absorb heat from the surrounding Arctic Ocean.?

    There is life up there
While the conditions may be considered too tough for most humans, there are native Inuit tribes living in northern Canada and Alaska. The outer reaches of the Arctic Circle are a great place to see polar bears in the wild. Keep an eye out for other Arctic dwellers like Orca, Humpback, and Beluga whales, the arctic fox, and Svalbard reindeer. This isn't the only place to see reindeer in the world; a reindeer herd in the U.K. inhabits the Cairngorm Mountains of northern Scotland. One animal you won't see in the North Pole is the penguin. They live in the South Pole. Several species of flying penguin-like birds called auks, guillemots, and puffins can be seen in the Arctic Circle, though.?

Santa Claus is not the only legendary character in the North Pole
Did you know that the creature that inspired myths about unicorns comes from the North Pole? The narwhal, a small whale that lives in the chilly waters of the Arctic Circle, has a six-to-10-foot long tusk, a trait that earned it the nickname "unicorn of the sea." Back in the 16th century, they were often believed to possess magical powers that could be used to cure diseases. Demand was high, and legend has it that Queen Elizabeth I shelled out 10,000 pounds to get her hands on her very own narwhal tusk. Nowadays, narwhal populations are on the decline, due to hunting (Inuit peoples use the meat, tusks, and vitamin-C-rich skin in their everyday lives), climate change, and fishing for halibut, their main source of food.?

Santa's magical workshop isn't in the North Pole proper???but it is nearby
Shh! Don't tell the kids, but Santa's Workshop isn't really in the North Pole???it's in Finnish Lapland. You can visit Santa Claus Village in the Finnish town of Rovaniemi year round, send letters to and from his post office (they'll bear the official postmark of the Arctic Circle), and spend time exploring Santa Park, a series of Christmas-themed caves where you can meet jolly old St. Nick and his elves. You can even visit Santa's reindeer at the onsite Sirmakko Reindeer Family Farm. If Finnish Lapland seems a little out of reach, Santa also has a satellite workshop in the holiday-themed town of North Pole, Alaska where the streets have names like Kris Kringle, Mistletoe, Donner, and Blitzen.

If you would rather write to Santa than visit his workshops, the U.S. Postal Service will postmark letters from Santa Claus as long as they are received by December 10th each year. Simply mail your letters to North Pole Postmark Postmaster, 41-41 Postmark Drive, Anchorage, Alaska 99530 with "Santa, North Pole" marked as the return address. If time is of the essence, you can always email Santa??he'll answer it right away. On Christmas Eve, use the Santa Tracker North Pole Command Center app ($1.99) to keep an eye on Santa's progress.?

    You can vacation there
While not exactly a budget destination, you can embark on your own Arctic adventure. Quark Expeditions offers a wide variety of cruising expeditions ranging from the Spitsbergen Explorer, an 11-day cruise around the Norwegian island (from $4,995 per person) to The Ultimate Arctic Adventure, which sails from Russia to the 90-degree north spot that represents the North Pole, visits Franz Josef Land, and tours the Arctic Ocean (from $23,995 per person). Go from June to mid-July to see the polar bears and walrus hunting in their own natural habitat, from mid-July to mid-August to see flowers and other arctic flora in bloom, or from mid-August to September as birds begin to migrate South.

    There?are hot springs up there
If you are in the frigid Arctic Circle, you'll need to find a way to warm up.?Chena Hot Springs, located about an hour outside Fairbanks has a natural geothermal hot spring in a rock lake surrounded by nature. The hot springs are open from 7 a.m. to midnight, giving you plenty of time to soak and get a front row seat for the Aurora Borealis (best viewed between August and May). You can also stay at the Chena Hot Springs Resort ($65 a night to room in a Mongolia-style yurt, or stay in a room at the resort for from $189 a night). A number of hot springs can also be found in Norway's Svalbard Islands, in Iceland (the Landmannalaugar Hot Springs is well-known), and in Russia??? Scientific American profiled the hot springs in Oymyakon, Siberia, the coldest town on Earth.?

There is a North Pole marathon every year
The North Pole Marathon bills itself as the World's Coolest Marathon, and with an average wind chill temperature of 22 degrees below zero, they'd be right. It's happened every year since 2002???in 2011, 255 people from 38 nations around the world braved the conditions to compete in the 26.2-mile marathon race on top of a floating Arctic ice shelf. Competitors are transported to an international North Pole Camp on the polar ice shelf to start the race. And they layer up-thermal layers, windproof pants, gloves, two pairs of socks, and even goggles are necessary. The next North Pole Marathon takes place on April 9, 2013, and costs a pretty penny???about $15,561 for the entry fee that includes accommodations in Spitsbergen, Greenland, before and after the race, flights to and from the North Pole Camp, helicopter flights within the polar region, medals, and a commemorative DVD of the race. But the bragging rights are priceless.

How to Talk to Children, Teens in Your Life about Sandy Hook ...

From Dr. Alan Wolfelt (scroll down to learn more about the author):

Once again we are faced with the traumatic, violent deaths of a group of innocent people, this time precious children in Newtown, Connecticut. I have been asked to provide some guidelines on how to communicate with children and teens about this tragedy. If you know of others who might benefit from this information, I invite you to forward this article to them.

First, it?s important to remember that children can cope with what they know, but they can?t cope with a reality they are over-protected from. As a father and as a counselor, I understand the instinct to want to protect children from such tragic news. But the reality is that many if not most of the children and teens in our lives (with the exception of the very youngest) have already heard about the recent school shooting from their peers, social media, or television. They have been exposed to the fact that 20 first-graders were shot by a stranger who barged into an elementary school. Many of them have also seen photos of the killer and of the children and teachers who were killed. Some may have read the horrific details of the massacre.

The point is, we cannot protect children from the tragedy, but we can let them teach us how they feel about it. As the caring adults in their lives, we have the responsibility to be available to them when they are struggling to understand what happened or if they have fears that the same thing could happen in their schools. We also have the responsibility to be honest with them within the boundaries of what is developmentally appropriate for a given child.

    Listen (and observe), then respond

Watch the children in your life a little more closely this week and in the weeks to come. Notice if they are listening to news of the shooting, reading news online or in print, sharing stories that other kids have told them at school, or asking questions about the shooting. If it?s on their mind, or if you think it might be, then it?s your turn to ask a couple open-ended questions. ?What have you heard about the school shooting that happened last week?? ?Are the kids or teachers at your school talking about the kids who died in Connecticut?? You can also share your feelings: ?I?ve been feeling sad about the children who were killed last week.?

Also watch for a change in behavior. Children who are more irritable or aggressive than usual or who are complaining of physical ailments uncharacteristically may essentially be telling you that they have absorbed some of the nation?s horror and anxiety about what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary.

When ignored, children and teens feel all alone in their grief. Respond to them with sensitivity and warmth. Use a caring tone of voice; maintain eye contact when talking with and learning from them. This commitment to actively listening tells children that their feelings will be respected.

Remember that often kids don?t want to have a long conversation about the tragedy. They don?t want to be ?talked at.? But if they?re given the opportunity, many will tell you what?s on their mind, allowing you a glimpse into their reality. Respond based on what they tell you or show you through their behaviors. Use their words and level of understanding. Don?t over-explain. Keep it simple and honest and loving. Let them know you?re someone they can talk to about the tough things.

Also, some kids, especially younger ones, may truly not be concerned about the shooting because it seems like just another far-away story that doesn?t affect them. That?s why it?s important to listen and observe, then respond. Allow for a discussion but don?t insist on one if the child isn?t telling or showing you she?s sad, anxious or perplexed. Let the child lead.

    Safety first

If a child is expressing, verbally or behaviorally, that she is afraid, reassure her that you and the other grown-ups in her life are doing everything you can to make sure that she is safe. Because it?s true, it?s OK to say, ?This kind of thing almost never happens. It?s a one-in-a-million situation. You?re protected.?

Teens are ready to handle the more nuanced truth, which is that safety can?t be 100 percent guaranteed in anything we do in life. Model living each day with boldness, resilience, meaning, and purpose for the teens in your life.

Many kids will find it helpful to review school safety and security procedures, and indeed, this is happening at schools across the country as I write this. Physically show them the security measures in place and step through the drills.

In the home, if a child seems to be regressing to the behaviors of younger kids?such as wanting to sleep with mom and dad, bedwetting, thumb-sucking, etc., these are signs that this child simply needs some extra attention right now. Don?t punish him for the regressive behaviors. Indulge them for now. And spend extra time with him in the coming days and weeks. Be available when he gets up, when he comes home from school, after dinner, and on weekends as much as you can.

    Be the grown-up

We as a nation have been traumatized by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. The multiple, violent deaths of precious young children and the adults who cared for them can result in intense feelings of shock, fear, anxiety and helplessness. Some of us confront these feelings by obsessively watching TV coverage of the event or talking about it with anyone and everyone.

While it?s normal and natural for us to try to integrate the reality of what happened in these ways, this kind of exposure may be too much for children. So limit your media viewing and conversation about the tragedy in front of your children. Younger kids, especially, don?t need to know and aren?t developmentally mature enough yet to handle all the details.

Be calm, reassuring, and positive. Be the caregiver. If you need to talk about your own thoughts and feelings about what happened, find another adult to talk to out of earshot of the kids. Never lie to children or hide the truth from them, but do limit their exposure.

Older kids, especially teens, may, like many adults, work through their thoughts and feelings by engaging with the national media and conversation about the shooting. Try watching the news together with these teens and talking about what you see. Be careful not to reverse roles. Don?t display your own grief so much that the child is forced to take care of you instead of the other way around. Seek outside support for yourself if you need it.

    Search for meaning ? together

As we all struggle to understand what can never be understood, we naturally turn to rituals and faith. If you attend a place of worship and there is a message about the shooting during the service, this may be helpful for your older child to hear. Model prayer, meditation, singing, spending time in nature or whichever activities are helpful to you in connecting to your spirituality. Attending a service or candle-lighting in memory of the children who died may be helpful for your family.

Participating in activities that connect us as humans can also be meaningful at this time. Children of all ages can participate in activities like making cards to send to the surviving children at Sandy Hook Elementary or supporting children in need in your own community through volunteer efforts like food or toy drives. If a child wants to talk about where the children who died ?went,? be honest with her about your beliefs and ask her about hers. Encourage this conversation without feeling you need to know all the answers.

Thank you for being an adult who is committed to helping children learn to navigate our challenging times and emerge as resilient, communicative, and compassionate adults themselves. The world needs more communicators and compassion-givers. Perhaps if we work on these learned skills together, one day we will have no more need of articles like this one.

Solar cells can stick to phones, windows

    12 hrs.

Business cards, cellphones and windows could all get a little boost from a sticky new invention. Researchers have created thin, flexible solar cells that can stick to paper, plastic, glass and many other materials, just by using double-sided tape.

"Now you can put them on helmets, cellphones, convex windows, portable electronic devices, curved roofs, clothing ? virtually anything," Xiaolin Zheng, a mechanical engineer at Stanford University who led the development of the new solar cells,?said in a statement.

The cells are a step toward turning more and more everyday items into either electronics or solar power-harvesting surfaces.?Solar cells placed on windows?could help a building absorb more solar power than roof installations alone, for example. And a combination of flexible solar panels and electronics could lead to products such as?electrified "smart" clothes?that control a connected smartphone.

Zheng and her team's creation may help smart clothes come a little sooner, too. The techniques they used could help engineers make flexible circuits, transistors, liquid crystal displays and other electronics, the researchers say.

Solar panels currently in use must have a glass or silicon backing, so they're necessarily rigid. But researchers in several labs are trying to change that. Other efforts TechNewsDaily has covered include?solar cells printed on paper?and a kind of?solar power glitter.

Zheng and her team's invention, which they've called the peel-and-stick process, gets around one major difficulty in making flexible solar cells: manufacturing the solar cells onto a non-rigid surface. In the peel-and-stick process, thin-film solar cells are still manufactured on a stiff, silicon wafer. But, in a major difference, the wafer is covered in nickel, which makes Zhang's process possible.

Once the thin-film solar cell is ready, researchers soak it in room-temperature water. The water molecules get between the nickel and the silicon, so that, eventually, researchers can peel the solar cell away from the rigid wafer. Then it's just a matter of adding some double-sided tape or another adhesive to stick the thin-film solar cell anywhere users want.

The solar cells don't lose any of their 7.5-percent efficiency after being peeled from their silicon backing and stuck somewhere else, Zheng said. The silicon backing often may be reused to make more solar cells.

Zheng and her colleagues?published a paper?about their work Dec. 20 in the journal Scientific Reports.
