WASHINGTON, July 25, 2013 Developing ways to treat cancer patients with drugs that kill only cancer cells and that have fewer side effects is one of the topics in the premiere segment of the 2013 season of a popular video series from the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society. The videos are available at http://www.acs.org/PrizedScience and on DVD.

Titled Prized Science: Peter Stang on Building Molecules, the first episode of the 2013 series features the research of Peter J. Stang, Ph.D., winner of the 2013 ACS Priestley Medal. He is a professor at the University of Utah and is the editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. The Priestley Medal is the highest honor of the ACS, and it recognizes Stang's pioneering work building molecules with "self-assembly." The video compares that approach to a Lego set, but one in which the blocks come together by themselves, the way nature assembles everything from microbes to people. Stang's research group uses self-assembly to build new medicines that can target a drug only to cancer cells.

Next in the 2013 series is an episode of Prized Science featuring Shirley Corriher, winner of the ACS 2013 James T. Grady-James H. Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public.

Then & Now: First Presbyterian Church's mission has always remained the same

ONEIDA >> The First Presbyterian Church on Broad Street is the oldest standing church in Oneida constructed in 1884.

According to City Historian Dave Alvord, the local Presbyterian Society dates back to 1844, well before the property was sold to the worshipers by Barrett Carriage Works.

The church put an addition on the building in the 1920s. According to Becky Williams, an elder at the church, said that the congregation continues a commitment to youth and community events. The church hosts a panoply of programs, including a Bible school and Kids Corner for youths and various holiday programs.

Another part of the Presbyterian Church complex is Secondhand Rose, the church?s consignment shop that was named after the woman who started it in the church basement. The building used to be the pastors? home, until it became unnecessary when pastors started owning their own homes in the community.

The church also sponsors the free prom dress program in March, Williams said these dresses can be available to borrow for special occasions throughout the year, as well with some advance notice.

?We do our best to help out everyone all year long, as much as we can,? Williams said.

Williams said that the next big happening at the Presbyterian Church will be the vacation Bible school, which combines elements of Bible study with community service projects and leisure activities. This year, the students will do their annual school supply drive, though they are earmarking their donations for young flood victims.

Mahut-Hewitt in Newport final; Isner loses

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) ? Two-time defending champion John Isner's run on Newport's grass court came to an end Sunday when he was ousted by No. 4 seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

It ended 13 straight match wins in Newport for the 28-year old Isner, the highest ranked American at No. 19.

In the other semifinal match played simultaneously on a side court, Nicolas Mahut of France advanced to the final by beating American Michael Russell 6-2, 6-2.

Mahut, a wild-card entrant, needed just 63 minutes Sunday to beat Russell one day after their match was suspended by rain after the third point. Isner and Hewitt never got started Saturday.

Isner's loss spoiled a rematch with Mahut. The pair played the longest match in tennis history when Isner beat Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set at Wimbledon in 2010 ? a match that lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes.

Hewitt won a rematch of last year's Hall of Fame final, won by Isner in straight sets.

Mahut's win began a long day, which includes a semifinal in doubles.

Like the kind of boyhood fantasy that delights in flying men and relishes dreams of dinosaurs, "Pacific?Rim," the latest film from director Guillermo Del Toro, is predicated on the simple, childlike thrill of seeing big ol' robots and big ol' monsters slug it out.

But while summer spectacles have grown ever larger in recent years, the monster movie ? the original city-smashing genre ? has mostly ceded the multiplexes to superheroes and more apocalyptic disaster films. But 14 years after Roland Emmerich's forgettable "Godzilla" remake, Del Toro's "Pacific?Rim" constitutes a large-scale attempt to bring Japan's beloved Kaiju movies ? their monster films, of which Ishiro Honda's 1954 "Godzilla" is the most famous ? to American shores.

"Monsters have always spoken to a part of me that is really, really essential," Del Toro, the Mexican director of the Oscar-nominated "Pan's Labyrinth," said in a recent interview. "All of my life, I felt out of place. The tragedy of every monster in every movie is that they are out of place. That's the essential plight of monsters."

In the 3-D "Pacific?Rim," which Warner Bros. will release on July 12, the 25-story-high Kaiju emanate (as is tradition) from the sea one by one, each uniquely grotesque beasts. To combat these monsters and defend the coastlines of the Pacific, equally giant robots called Jaegers are built, each controlled by two brain-connected pilots.

Since he was a child, Del Toro has compulsively drawn monsters, beginning with sketches of the Creature from "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and the Phantom from "Phantom of the Opera." He's still an obsessive drawer (he has a book of drawings for every movie he makes), but creating the creatures and robots of "Pacific?Rim" meant working in an entirely different scale.

While the Kaiju films of Toho studios were a formative influence on Del Toro, he boxed up his DVDs before starting work on "Pacific?Rim," intent on making a movie that wasn't a mere homage. Instead, he took inspiration less from Japanese monster films than paintings like Goya's "The Colossus" (which depicts a passing muscular giant, with fists raised, surrounded by clouds) and George Bellows' visceral boxing paintings of hulking combatants.

"I wanted to bring the awe and spectacle of when you watch something so big that the scale is inhuman," says Del Toro. "I kept thinking of the Goya painting because it seemed detached from ethical judgment. It's so beyond human. It's like watching a tornado and a hurricane clash."

Del Toro speaks majestically about monsters and robots, which might sound comical if he wasn't so earnestly heartfelt. With "Pacific?Rim," he sought the operatic grandeur of Goya and Bellows, attempting to capture what he calls "a beautiful monster pageantry." Battles would take place in the middle of the sea, with swirling storms and torrents of water.

Dow opens higher as earnings season looms

Stocks rose for the third-straight session Monday, as investors geared up for the start of the second quarter earnings season, but technology shares declined, weighing on the Nasdaq.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 88 points higher, at 15,224.69 led by Wal-Mart and UnitedHealth. The blue-chip index was within 200 points of reaching its record close of 15,409.39.

The S&P 500 was also higher, while the Nasdaq eked out a small gain. The Russell 2000 finished at a fresh all-time high after closing above 1,000 for the first time last Friday. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded below 15.

Most key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by utilities and consumer staples, while telecoms and techs lagged.

Aluminum producer Alcoa was slated to post second-quarter earnings numbers after the closing bell.

Financial giants JPMorgan and Wells Fargo are scheduled to post earnings later in the week.

So far, earnings pre-announcements have been very negative. As of last Friday, the ratio of negative-to-positive corporate comments stood at 6.5 to 1, according to Reuters, more than 2.5 times the normal pace and the most negative reading since 2001.

"We're a little more optimistic than the consensus right now, but any way you slice it, it's not going to be a good earnings season," said BTIG chief global strategist Daniel Greenhaus."Guidance is particularly important since you're going to have much less Federal Reserve accommodation."

The CNBC Fed Survey, taken right after Friday's jobs report, showed that on average, analysts now forecast the Fed will start scaling back its asset purchasing program in November. An earlier survey, taken a little over two weeks ago, showed the average forecast was for December.

Meanwhile, worries that Friday's upbeat U.S. jobs report could lead the Fed to unwind stimulus measures later this year weighed on Chinese stocks on Monday. The Shanghai Composite fell 2.4 percent to a one-week low, also hit by the news that Beijing will no longer extend credit to sectors that struggle with overcapacity.

"Chinese growth is once again being called into question... the market is thinking longer term and how a reduction in credit growth north of $100 billion will impact the economy," said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG, in a research note.

On the economic front, consumer credit increased in May by $19.6 billion to $2.8 trillion, the most in a year, according to the Federal Reserve. Economists polled by Reuters had expected consumer credit to rise $12.5 billion.

One Difference Between a Great Recession and a Great Depression: Jobs

On Friday we learned that the U.S. added another 195,000 (seasonally adjusted) non-farm jobs in June. That was a bit better than expected, and another sign that the economic recovery may be, ever so tentatively, gaining speed. But it will take 12 more months like June just to get non-farm employment back to the level of November 2007.

That's when employment peaked before the onset of the Great Recession at more than 139 million non-farm jobs; the fact that it's going to take close to seven years, if all goes well over the next year, just to get us back to that level is an indication of how bad the recession was and how weak the recovery has been. And getting back to the 2007 level isn't getting back to normal; the U.S. will have added about 17 million inhabitants between 2007 and 2014, a healthy labor market thus requires millions more jobs.

No other U.S. recession since World War II has been nearly this devastating to employment, as Calculated Risk's Bill McBride documents every month with the chart that Business Insider dubs "The Scariest Jobs Chart Ever."

But just because the Bureau of Labor Statistics' official employment numbers only go back to 1947 doesn't mean there isn't data available from before then. In the National Bureau of Economic Research's Macrohistory Database, one can find a series of monthly non-farm employment numbers running from 1929 to 1939, compiled by the BLS. And guess what: they make for a much scarier jobs chart than the current recession:

What lessons can one draw from this? Basically, if you think this downturn was comparable in origin and inherent severity to the other recessions since World War II, then we've been the victims of economic-policy bungling of epic proportions. If, on the other hand, you think the proper comparison is the Great Depression, the last U.S. downturn brought on by a severe financial crisis, you'd have to say the White House, Congress, and most of all the Federal Reserve have done an absolutely brilliant job relative to their early-1930s counterparts. I'd lean toward explanation No. 2 ? we did actually learn something from the Great Depression, although probably not enough.

A note on methodology: There are a few caveats about that 1930s data, the main one being that back then much more of the workforce was still on the farm, so the same percentage decline in non-farm employment might not have had quite the same impact on the economy. When I made versions of this chart during the Great Recession, I sometimes attempted to account for this, but it doesn't seem worth the effort here. Also, because the numbers from the 1930s weren't seasonally adjusted, I've used unadjusted jobs numbers for recent years, too, which explains why the chart is a little jumpy (without seasonal adjustments the June jobs gain was 422,000, for example).

App developer Shazam gets $40 million backing from tycoon Carlos Slim

LONDON (Reuters) - Smartphone app developer Shazam has found an unlikely ally in the form of Carlos Slim, one of the world's richest men, who is investing $40 million to back the development of the start-up best known for helping music fans identify catchy songs.

The move is surprising for 73-year-old Slim, who built his company America Movil in a more staid sector, namely the highly regulated telecommunications and TV business in Latin America.

Before Shazam, Slim's only forays into Europe were to plough 4.8 billion euros ($6.1 billion) into stakes in Dutch operator KPN and Telekom Austria, on which he is nursing huge paper losses after their shares declined sharply in the past year.

Slim, ranked the world's top billionaire by Forbes magazine with a net worth of $73 billion, was brought in by one of Shazam's venture capital owners, Silicon Valley fund Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

British-based Shazam will use the funds to accelerate its expansion into television, where its recognition software can tune into an advertisement's soundtrack then link viewers directly to the brand's website.

It wants to establish the offer in Britain and the rest of Western Europe and Latin America.

"Within 18 months we expect TV will significantly outperform the music side (of the business) and that's part of this investment," Andrew Fisher, executive chairman of Shazam, said in an interview.

HUGE OPPORTUNITY

Blue-chip brands such as Unilever, Procter & Gamble and American Express are among the companies who have already used Shazam in advertising campaigns in North America, where the company generates tens of millions of dollars in revenue from the TV side, Fisher said.

Given that global TV advertising spending totaled $350 billion in 2012, according to researchers Nielsen, the scale of the opportunity for Shazam is huge, said Fisher, who hopes the TV business will help build the company into one suitable for a stock-market listing.

"That's our ambition, to list ... Certainly, two years' time is realistic," he said. The company's products are already used by 350 million people.

America Movil has also agreed to promote Shazam across the dozen or so markets it operates in Latin America. "Shazam is defining a new category of media engagement that combines the power of mobile with traditional broadcast media and advertising," Slim said in a statement.

Slim's investment takes the total backing that Shazam has secured since 2009 to $72 million.

The billionaire businessman's empire of phone, construction and banking companies often expands by buying stakes in small companies. Earlier this year, Ora.TV, a fledgling online digital television network funded by America Movil, bought TV production company Stick Figure Productions.

Separately, Slim's Grupo Financiero Inbursa, which runs an investment fund managing about 5.15 billion pesos ($394.1 million), has invested in companies from film financier Movie Risk to natural gas company Gas Natural Mexico. ($1 = 0.7792 euros)

Shake Shack Opens in London's Covent Gardens, Draws Insane Queue

Looks like London has Shake Shack fever, burger fever in general actually. The American burger invasion is now officially on. Both Five Guys and Shake Shack opened their first locations in the UK on Thursday in London?s Covent Gardens. There were reports of a line,?er, queue, around the block for Five Guys, but initial indications are that the nearby Shake Shack may have won out when it came to drawing the largest crowds. According to the burgeoning burger empire's CEO Randy Garutti, people began queuing beginning at 5 a.m. to guarantee themselves a spot before the 10 o?clock opening of the American roadside burger stand (you may recall that Shake Shack was #11 on The Daily Meal's 2013 list of 101 Best Restaurants in America).

When reached for comment at about 8 p.m. on Thursday, Garutti, whose vines and tweets included some impressive looking crowds, called the Covent Gardens location, ?one of the most exciting openings we?ve ever had in the history of Shake Shack,? adding that the new location had between 100 to 175 people on line for the better part of the last 8 hours.

?We?re thankful,? said Garutti, ?It sounds like London wants to give us a shot. We had a great party last night. Some incredible chefs who really made a connection with our fine dining roots and Danny Meyer and all the great chefs here from London, people from Hakwsmoor, St JOHN, and many others. We?re just incredibly honored to be part of this exciting food scene and Covent Garden just is one of the most special exceptionally good feeling places that we could imagine a shake shack bringing people together.?

The Covent Gardens spot serves the standard menu, but according to an official release, ?the majority of ingredients and menu items are UK-sourced.? The burgers are being made with freshly-ground 100% Scottish Aberdeen Angus beef,? the SmokeShack features free-range Wiltshire cure smoked bacon, and the flat-top dog section features a London-only Cumberland sausage handmade by Sillfield Farm using a rare breed of pork from Cumbria.

And of course, like every other Shake Shack, there are a few location-specific concretes. These made with locally sourced baked goods and chocolate mix-ins from Shake Shack?s London partners St. JOHN Bakery and paul.a.young chocolates:

• Union Shack (chocolate custard, St. John Bakery chocolate hazelnut brownie, fudge sauce, paul.a.young chocolate chunks and sea salt
• Drury Lane Jam (vanilla custard, local strawberry jam, St. John Bakery brown sugar biscuit and fresh banana)

With 156 turns over its 12.42 miles (19.99 km) course and elevation changes ranging from 4,720 ft (1,440 m) to 14,110 ft (4,300 m), Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of the most grueling races in the world for both humans and machines. It's particularly challenging for gas-powered vehicles, since the air contains less oxygen at higher altitudes. As a result, electric cars and motorcycles have gained popularity at the event in recent years. In fact, 2013 marks the first time an electric bike's beaten its gas-powered rivals, with Carlin Dunne and Lightning Motorcycles finishing the race in 10 minutes 0.694 seconds -- ahead of Bruno Langlois who managed 10 minutes and 21.323 seconds on a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S. While electric vehicles are expected to dominate Pikes Peak in the near future, it's going to take a few more years before autonomous cars win the event.

Although the new Child Online Privacy Protection Act is now in effect, it may take some keen monitoring to make sure companies are following the law.

New rules aimed at protecting children using the Internet took effect Monday. This update makes the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) more relevant in the social media and mobile phone age, and places some additional burdens on companies that target kids under 13. The rules went live over objections from industry groups which recently requested a postponement.

Websites and phone apps that collect photos or geo-location data from children must now obtain express permission from parents, putting that data in the same category as kids' email or home addresses. The new rules also make firms more responsible for data collection by third parties, a loophole that had been exploited by marketers in the past.

Parents might not notice much change at first. Some apps that kids use might begin requesting parental permissions via emails or other methods, and parents should make sure kids don't circumvent those rules by using fake email address to grant themselves permission.

The Center for Digital Democracy, a privacy advocacy group, hailed the move, saying the law needed to be updated for the age of Big Data.

"Today marks an important moment for parents of children 12 and under," said Jeff Chester, the group?s executive director. "Finally their child's privacy online ? whether they use a mobile phone, tablet, gaming device or computer ? is protected. The new ... rules put the parent in charge of what data can be collected from their child."

Others worry that the stricter rules will mean some companies will stop making kids' apps and that young tech users will lie their way onto adult services instead of going through the steps needed to get parental permission.

"The Rule may be counterproductive, lessening the quality and scope of content directed specifically to children, which may encourage more children to visit general audience sites," wrote the law firm Hogan Lovells, which specializes in privacy, in a blog post.

Original law passed in 1998
Congress passed the original COPPA law in 1998, long before services like Twitter or Facebook existed, and put the Federal Trade Commission in charge of keeping it current.

Industry groups were sour on the changes from the minute the FTC proposed them last year. The Interactive Advertising Bureau, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and several other groups made a last-ditch attempt this spring to convince the FTC to postpone implementation of the changes for six months in order to prepare for the update. But in a letter dated May 6, the FTC rejected the request, essentially saying the groups had plenty of time to get ready.

But the FTC signaled that it would go easy on enforcement for awhile.

?We continue to be mindful of the impact of the Rule on businesses. As with all of our enforcement activities, the Commission will exercise prosecutorial discretion in enforcing the Rule, particularly with respect to small businesses that have attempted to comply with the Rule in good faith in the early months," the agency said.

Facebook and children
Kids already have a very complicated relationship with popular sites like Facebook, with various actors playing out an online kabuki dance. Facebook, for example, doesn't allow under 13 kids to use its site, so the firm isn't subject to COPPA restrictions. But millions of kids lie their way onto the social network anyway, and half the parents of 12-year-old kids say their kids use the site.

The new COPPA won't have any real impact on this circumvention, but it might impact third-party developers who target kids on Facebook, said privacy law expert Bradley Shear.

"I believe the updates will require Facebook to become more vigilant about policing the apps they allow on their website. The FTC has fired a warning shot to not only Facebook but to other digital ecosystems that they must do a better job of ensuring that they protect the personal privacy of children," he said. "I think the FTC may start cracking down on digital platforms that are looking the other way regarding the age of its users. "

Facebook told NBC News Monday that it's "in the process of updating our terms and policies" to reflect the new rules. "For our part, we encourage developers to become familiar with our revised policies, particularly around social plugins," a company representative said.

The COPPA update includes other provisions aimed at protecting children, too. Firms are forbidden from using digital identifiers, like cookies, to track kids and to serve them ads based on their behaviors. It also forces firms to delete data they do collect on kids for purely technological reasons as soon as possible.

While the changes might not be enforced immediately, or noticed by users, the Center for Democracy and Technology has already begin a public effort to make sure the new rules have some bite. It sent a letter to dozens of partner organizations asking that they police the Web watching for COPPA violations.

"There are a lot of child-directed websites and apps out there, so we are going to need all the help we can get making sure that after July 1, all are following the new children?s privacy rules," the letter says, and includes an email address for notifying the organization and the FTC.

The FTC recently published a frequently-asked-questions primer on the new rules for parents and businesses.

Measha Brueggergosman will host the show, with a special performance by Commander Chris Hadfield, several musicians and guest appearances.

European officials slam US over bugging report

BERLIN (AP) ? Senior European officials expressed concern Sunday at reports that U.S. intelligence agents bugged EU offices on both sides of the Atlantic, with some leftist lawmakers calling for concrete sanctions against Washington.

The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, said he was "deeply worried and shocked about the allegations of U.S. authorities spying on EU offices" made in a report published Sunday by German news weekly Der Spiegel.

The magazine said the surveillance was carried out by the U.S. National Security Agency, which has recently been the subject of leaks claiming it scanned vast amounts of foreign Internet traffic. The U.S. government has defended its efforts to intercept electronic communications overseas by arguing that this has helped prevent terror attacks at home and abroad.

Schulz said that if the allegations that the NSA bugged European Union offices were confirmed "it would be an extremely serious matter which will have a severe impact on EU-US relations."

Green Party leaders in the European Parliament, Rebecca Harms and Daniel Cohn-Bendit, called for an immediate investigation into the claims and suggested that recently launched negotiations on a trans-Atlantic trade treaty should be put on hold.

They also called for existing U.S.-EU agreements on the exchange of bank transfer and passenger record information to be canceled. Both programs have been labeled as unwarranted infringements of citizens' privacy by left-wing and libertarian lawmakers in Europe.

In Germany, where criticism of the NSA's surveillance programs has been particularly vocal, a senior government official accused the United States on Sunday of using Cold War methods against its allies by targeting EU offices in Washington, New York and Brussels.

"If the media reports are accurate, then this recalls the methods used by enemies during the Cold War," German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger. "It is beyond comprehension that our friends in the United States see Europeans as enemies."

Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger called for an "immediate and comprehensive" response from the U.S. government to the claims in the Spiegel report, which cited classified U.S. documents taken by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden that the magazine said it had partly seen.

Spokespeople for the NSA and the office for the national intelligence director in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment Sunday.

According to Der Spiegel, the NSA planted bugs in the EU's diplomatic offices in Washington and infiltrated the building's computer network. Similar measures were taken at the EU's mission to the United Nations in New York, the magazine said.

Der Spiegel didn't publish the alleged NSA documents it cited nor say how it obtained access to them. But one of the report's authors is Laura Poitras, an award-winning documentary filmmaker who interviewed Snowden while he was holed up in Hong Kong.

The U.S. has been trying to track down Snowden, who is believed to currently be at Moscow's main airport with plans to travel to Ecuador to seek asylum.

The magazine also didn't specify how it learned of the NSA's alleged eavesdropping efforts at a key EU office in Brussels. There, the NSA used secure facilities at NATO headquarters nearby to dial into telephone maintenance systems that would have allowed it to intercept senior EU officials' calls and Internet traffic, the Spiegel report said.

Also Sunday, German federal prosecutors said they were examining whether the reported U.S. electronic surveillance programs broke German laws. In a statement, the Federal Prosecutors' Office said it was probing the claims so as to "achieve a reliable factual basis" before considering whether a formal investigation was warranted.

It said private citizens were likely to file criminal complaints on the matter, but didn't comment on the possible legal merits of such complaints.

Der Spiegel reported that at least one such complaint was lodged with prosecutors in the state of Hesse last week.
