Ustream on PlayStation 4: discovery, one-click sharing and being 'a modern day cable provider'

How Ustream will work on PlayStation 4

"We've partnered with some of the biggest and most influential social networks in the world, including Facebook and Ustream, to bring gamers friends into games like never before," former Gaikai CEO David Perry told attendees of Sony's PlayStation 4 event last week. It was the only mention Ustream got during the show, despite the video streaming service playing a critical role in Sony's next video game console. In-tandem with the PlayStation 4's new DualShock 4 controller and its "Share" button, users will be able to quickly upload saved gameplay video clips or directly stream their game out to the internet. The console's lead system architect, Mark Cerny, expanded on the importance of the Share button and its implications to the PlayStation 4 during last week's presentation. "Social play is so important to PlayStation 4 that we've added in hardware to support it, in the form of dedicated, always-on video compression and decompression systems," he said.

We saw a bit of the game sharing / streaming interface during Sony's presentation, but were left wondering about specifics: how will discovery work? and what of other, non-gaming Ustream content? Thankfully, Ustream CEO Brad Hunstable was able to offer up most of our answers in a recent interview. "Our goal is to allow discovery in a very clean user experience, both in discovery on the console itself and on various platforms that the content'll be available on (like Ustream, Twitter, and Facebook)," Hunstable said. He wouldn't speak to the specifics of how that discovery will work, nor would he say if you'll be able to sign-in simply using your PlayStation Network ID or if you'll have to sign up for a separate Ustream account, but he stressed that the decisions being made are, "based on what's easiest and best for the gamer." That same rubric is (thankfully) being applied to functionality. "The goal is to make sure it's very easy -- one click of a button, super simple -- and most importantly make sure it looks really, really good. And is viewable wherever people want to watch it from," Hunstable said.

LG aims to raise smartphone sales by 52 percent

(AP) ? LG Electronics Inc. is aiming to raise its smartphone sales by more than half this year as it makes a shift from basic phones to high-end devices after lagging competitors for several years.

The South Korean company aims to sell more than 40 million smartphones in 2013, it said in a statement on Monday. LG shipped 26.3 million smartphones in 2012, fewer than HTC Corp. and Research In Motion Ltd. which each shipped more than 32 million smartphones.

To meet the sales goal, LG will release handsets in all price ranges from high-tier to affordable models and go all out in both developed and emerging markets.

"We aim to improve profitability and also to become a top-tier smartphone brand," Park Jong-seok, head of LG's mobile phone business, told reporters at a mobile industry fair in Barcelona, according to the statement.

LG faces similar challenges to other second-tier smartphone vendors. They are squeezed by the two smartphone giants ? Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. ? that are dominating most of the profit in the smartphone industry and also by Chinese makers that are expanding in the smartphone markets of fast-growing emerging countries.

But LG hopes to make its Optimus brand stand out by drawing on technologies from other parts of the LG empire. The company is the largest shareholder in LG Display Co. and has collaborated with other LG affiliates on batteries and cameras.

LG was the world's third-largest maker of cellphones in 2009 but was caught off guard by the popularity of smartphones. In the fourth quarter of 2012, LG sold fewer phones than Chinese rivals Huawei Technologies Ltd. and ZTE Corp., which are expanding shipments of their cheaper smartphones.

Its mobile communications division was profitable for the first time in three years last year as it moved its focus from basic phones to lucrative smartphones.

Samsung Announces Galaxy Note 8, Aiming To Dethrone The iPad Mini

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Samsung Electronics is beefing up its tablet range with a competitor to Apple's iPad Mini that sports a pen for writing on the screen.

The Korean company announced on Sunday in Barcelona that the Galaxy Note 8.0 will have an 8-inch screen, putting it very close in size to the Apple's tablet, which launched in November with a 7.9-inch screen. It's not the first time Samsung has made a tablet that's in the Mini's size range: it's very first iPad competitor had a 7-inch screen, and it still makes a tablet of that size, but without a pen.

Samsung will start selling the new tablet in the April to June period, at an as yet undetermined price. It made the announcement ahead of Mobile World Congress, the wireless industry's annual trade show, which starts Monday in Barcelona, Spain.

The Note 8.0 fills a gap in Samsung's line-up of pen-equipped devices between the Galaxy Note II smartphone, with its 5.5-inch screen, and the Galaxy Note 10.1, a full-size tablet. Samsung has made the pen, or more properly the stylus, one of the tools it uses to chip away at Apple's dominance in both tablets and high-end smartphones. Apple doesn't make any devices that work with styluses, preferring to optimize its interfaces for fingers, mice and touchpads.

On Samsung's Note line, the pens can be used to write, highlight and draw. The screens also sense when the mouse hovers over the screen, providing an equivalent to the hovering mouse cursor on the PC. However, few third-party applications have been modified to take full advantage of the pens.

BT Infinity and Apple?s AirPort Express

Image: Apple

Image: Apple

As BT?s continues its fibre broadband roll-out, more and more users are looking to ditch the ISP?s HomeHub in favour of something a little more flexible and attractive.

When used with traditional copper broadband, the HomeHub serves as both router and modem but with BT Infinity the device is switched to router-only mode and a separate modem is installed by Openreach.

While use of that modem is a contractual part of the service ? indeed even ISPs aren?t currently allowed to issue their own fibre modems ? users are free to use any router they want.

An ever popular question is how to use Openreach modem with Apple?s AirPort Express.

The good news is that using the pair together is a doddle, thanks in part to an easy set-up wizard built into Mac OS and a handy app available for the iPhone and iPad.

First step is to physically connect the modem and AirPort Express, to do this remove all the cables from the HomeHub and disconnect it from the power supply.

Then plug the ethernet cable (often this is a red cable) which used to connect the Hub to modem to the WAN port on the AirPort Express ? when viewing the Express from the rear this is the left-most of the two ethernet ports.

When this, simply connect the power cable to the AirPort Express and plug it in.

The next step is to set up the AirPort Express to allow you to WiFi access to the web.

First, open the AirPort utility on your Mac (you can find this by clicking the WiFi indicator on the Mac?s top menu bar or in the Utilities folder located in Applications).

This will bring up a configuration page, as well as giving the WiFi network a name and password, you?ll also need to set the network options to the following values:

Connection type: Connect Using PPoE.
Account name: bthomehub@btbroadband.com.
Password: There is no password on a BT Infinity account so you can enter anything you like
Service name: Blank
Connection: Always On
Disconnect if Idle: Never

One of the reasons Mac users like to use the AirPort Express is it allows easy use of Apple?s Back to the Mac feature to share files, sharing a printer and, if connected to a speaker, use of AirPay to play music from a Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

In addition, while they?re no longer considered good ways of securing a network, the AirPort Express also allows the network name (SSID) to be hidden and for the Mac IDs (sometimes called Wireless IDs) to be filtered so that only specified devices can connect to the network.

Both of these could be overcome by a someone determined enough but they remain popular features and preferences which BT removed from the HomeHub?s settings.

China Now Has More Tablets And Smartphones Than The US

After becoming the world?s leading manufacturer of goods and largest emitter of carbon dioxide, China can add world?s leading consumer of mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) to its trophy case.

?By the end of February 2013, China will have 246 million devices compared to 230 million in the U.S.,??says mobile analytics company Flurry, which estimates that its survey covers more than 90% of the world?s ?smart devices.?

In January, the US and China were within one million devices of one another. Flurry is measuring what it calls ?active? devices, which means phones and tablets that are actually connecting to the internet, and not simply devices sold.

SmartDevice_InstalledBase_Jan2013-resized-600

Despite the enormous size of the Chinese market, it is still the sixth-fastest growing market for tablets and smartphones, by Flurry?s estimate.

SmartDevice_GrowthRates_Jan2013-resized-600

Even as this growth slows, its dizzying pace, and the relatively maturity of the US market for smartphones means that China will almost certainly remain a larger market for mobile devices than the US.

Dell profit plummets 31 percent as investors ponder $24 billion buyout

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Dell Inc on Tuesday reported a 31 percent drop in profit, hurt by a shrinking consumer business, as investors weighed founder Michael Dell's offer to buy out the world's No.3 maker of personal computers.

Michael Dell, teaming up with private equity firm Silver Lake and software maker Microsoft, is offering $13.65 a share to buy out the company, but at least four of its largest investors are opposed to the $24.4 billion deal.

The founder and CEO did not join in management discussion of the results in a conference call with analysts, given his participation in the buyout. Dell executives also did not comment on the buyout.

Analysts said Dell's rapidly shrinking business and murky prospects in a declining PC market may make the buyout a more attractive option for investors tired of waiting for a turnaround.

Since news of the proposed buyout emerged in January, the stock has gained almost 30 percent - a rally that analysts say may evaporate should the deal fall through.

On Tuesday, the company said sales across every business line, except servers and networking, declined in the fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue from servers and networking climbed 18 percent, driven by its datacenter business and revenue from recently acquired companies such as Quest Software and Sonic Wall.

Overall, however, revenue slid 11 percent.

"There isn't anything really to be super excited about," Brian Marshall, analyst with ISI Group, said, adding that declining revenue and profit doesn't bode well for the company.

"The (buyout) deal makes sense. It will go through," he said. "They will probably have to pay a little more than $13.65 to get it done but at the end of the day there aren't a lot of options out there."

The company gave no financial forecast for fiscal 2014 or the fiscal first quarter, citing the proposed buyout.

The company reiterated that it plans to file a proxy statement with the U.S. securities regulators on the merger agreement but made no other reference to the buyout in its earnings release.

Shareholders representing almost 14 percent of Dell shares not held by Michael Dell have now said they will vote against the deal. The billionaire, who created the computer maker from his college dorm room in 1984, holds a roughly 16 percent stake and needs a majority of shareholders - excluding him - to vote for the deal.

Some are holding out hope for a higher offer. Peter Misek, analyst with Jefferies, said a bumped-up offer of about $15 per share was a "fair price."

"The better-than-expected results means that's the fair thing to do, in our opinion, is to raise the bid to a price where current shareholders reap some of the rewards while the take-private consortium enjoys the prospect of a respectable return," Misek said.

SLIDING PC SALES

Dell posted net income of $530 million, or 30 cents a share, in its fiscal fourth quarter on revenue of $14.3 billion. That came in slightly higher than the average analyst estimate of revenue of $14.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Excluding certain items, it earned 40 cents a share, compared to an average forecast for 39 cents.

Shares of the company edged 0.5 percent higher in after-hours trade to $13.87, from a close of $13.805 on the Nasdaq.

Dell has said it plans to stick to its current turnaround strategy to diversify away from personal computers following the buyout.

The company, once regarded as a model of innovation in the early 2000s for pioneering online ordering of custom-configured PCs, missed the big industry shift to tablet computers, smartphones and high-powered consumer electronics such as music players.

It is also had to defend its market share against hard-charging Asian rivals like Lenovo.

Dell has lost 40 percent of its value since last year's peak and is trying to reinvent itself as a seller of services to corporations - an internal overhaul that some analysts say may be better conducted away from public scrutiny.

The company, was also hurt by the slide in holiday-season sales of personal computers for the first time in more than five years despite the launch of Microsoft Corp's new Windows 8 operating system.

Dell's worldwide PC shipments fell nearly 21 percent to 9.48 million in the last three months of 2012 from 11.97 million in the same period a year ago, according to IDC.

The bright spot for Dell was its growing sales of its enterprise solutions and services revenue, which rose 6 percent to $5.2 billion, and accounted for 34 percent of revenue for fiscal year.

In contrast, consumer revenue plummeted 24 percent to $2.8 billion, underscoring the plight of the broader PC market while sales to large corporations declined 7 percent to $4.7 billion in the quarter.

Dell said it was seeing growth in tablets and low-end desktops and notebooks. It ended fiscal 2013 with $15.3 billion in cash and investments.

California Federal Parks and Lands Get Cash Infusion

WASHINGTON?D.C.-?Aiming to keep the air clean in America's most natural settings, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood?announced Monday that $12.5 million in grants for 29 projects in 20 states to improve access to America's national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges. California will receive over 2 million dollars of the grants for 5 different projects.

Federal leaders say the selected projects will help reduce traffic congestion and make it easier for millions of visitors to enjoy the nation's scenic Federal lands. The funds are provided through the Federal Transit Administration's?Paul S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks program.

Lahood commented on the grants saying, "In his State of the Union address last week, President Obama called on us to upgrade our nation's transportation infrastructure to help grow our economy and improve energy efficiency. Improving access to modern transit services throughout our scenic parklands and protected areas will help us to preserve these national treasures for future generations."

"By taking cars off the road and reducing harmful emissions and pollutants in our nation's most natural and pristine settings, we're helping Americans and visitors from around the world enjoy these public lands as they were meant to be enjoyed," said Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff. "From new pedestrian walkways and bicycle trails to energy-efficient shuttle buses, these investments help to keep our parks sustainable for years to come."

In California, here are the 5 grant funded projects:?

Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System ($583,941) ? The Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System will receive funds to purchase a clean-diesel, ADA- accessible motor coach and expand its transit service to Yosemite National Park, where demand for alternative forms of transportation has been rising along with the number of visitors to the park each year.

Golden Gate National Recreation Area ($400,000) ? The Golden Gate National Recreation Area will receive funds to expand and complete the multi-use Bay Trail in the Presidio of San Francisco, creating an accessible, multi-use route for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling from the Golden Gate Bridge to destinations along the northern waterfront of San Francisco.

Marin County Transit District ($638,000) ? The Marin County Transit District will receive funds to purchase new vehicles and signage to expand its Muir Woods Shuttle service between Sausalito and the Muir Woods National Monument, which has 800,000 annual visitors. The shuttle service provides clean, fuel-efficient transportation to the park, easing congestion for visitors.

USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Region ($200,000) ? The USDA Forest Service will receive funds to complete a multi-agency planning effort to develop priority transit corridors to connect communities in Central and Southern California to federal lands, including popular destinations such as Yosemite, Muir Woods, Lake Tahoe, San Gabriel Canyon and Lytle Creek. During peak visiting periods, vehicular demand often exceeds the capacity of area roads and parking facilities to access many of these locations, so a transit alternative is critical.

USDA Forest Service, Southwest Region ($299,500) ? The USDA Forest Service will receive funds to expand multi-agency efforts develop and implement a Traveler Information System for transit services to federal lands in Southern California, including a web site and mobile applications to promote alternative transit options and educate users on new ways to access America's great outdoors.

Why Microsoft?s new Office 2013 license may send users to Google Docs

If you buy a perpetual retail license for Office 2013, it will be locked to the computer you first install it on, forever. Buy a new PC and you won't be allowed to install your existing copy of Office on it, even if you wipe the disk of the old PC. You'll have to splurge for a new one.

This is a change in policy from Office 2010. Office 2010 permitted a single transition from one PC to a new one. It's not, however, an entirely new policy: OEM pre-installed versions of Office (and Windows) are similarly tied to their (OEM) hardware and can't migrate. Adam Turner at The Age?first pressed Microsoft for clarification over what its "single PC" constraint actually meant, and noted the newly aligned OEM and retail licenses.

It's difficult to see the wisdom in this change. It's not a big change, but it's not a nice one, either.

Retail sales make up a minority of the Office business. Microsoft doesn't habitually report the exact level of retail sales, but we can perhaps make estimates based on the information the company does provide.

The Microsoft Business Division (MBD), the reporting group within the company that includes Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Dynamics, and Lync, reported last quarter that 60 percent of its revenue is from multi-year subscriptions?Software Assurance plans. The remaining 40 percent is what Microsoft calls "transactional;" one-off purchases, encompassing both OEM preinstalls and boxed copies bought online or in bricks-and-mortar stores.

The company's 2012 annual report also has some useful information. The report says that in its 2012 financial year, 80 percent of its sales were to businesses, 20 percent to consumers. A reasonable inference is that business sales include essentially all of the multi-year revenue (as it is only this year that Microsoft offered a consumer-oriented subscription, Office 365 Home Premium), and about half of the transactional revenue.

In the annual report, Microsoft also emphasizes that while the 80 percent of business revenue is relatively consistent, driven primarily by the number of information workers, the 20 percent is much more dependent on the broader level of PC sales and product launches. This in turn suggests that a significant proportion of it is made up of OEM sales, for which there's been no relevant licensing change.

One final data point: Windows division reports that around 75-80 percent of its revenue comes from OEM sales.

Even optimistically, retail revenue is unlikely to account for more than 20 percent of MBD revenue, and it might be a lot less. If MBD's transactional revenue has the same level of OEM sales as Windows, it'd mean that retail sales were no more than 10 percent of revenue. It's a nice business, but it's not Microsoft's major money-maker, and not representative of the majority of Office customers.

It's spectacularly unlikely that this licensing change is going to increase that revenue in any meaningful way. It's also unlikely to make any material difference to many people. The only people who'd be impacted are those who migrate software between systems, and while that's common among enthusiasts, it's probably not mainstream: the mainstream solution is to buy an OEM preinstall license, or buy retail Office alongside a new PC, use that PC for 5 years (or more) until it no longer works, then throw it away and repeat the process.

Transplanting software from one machine to another (or invoking Ship of Theseus-like questions over when an upgraded PC becomes a new one) is something for enthusiasts?perhaps explaining why the OEM license restrictions have for the most part been shrugged off?and even if Microsoft managed to generate some extra sales to those enthusiasts, it's never going to amount to very much.

But that is arguably missing the point. The software giant is penalizing a small, typically vocal group of users and provoking many column inches of complaint. This is a change that looks bad. It makes Microsoft appear petty and small-minded, determined to wring every last dollar from its customer base. And while that may in fact be the case, doing so in such a brazen manner does nothing more than get people's backs up.

The underlying reason for the change is almost certainly not any direct revenue generated by additional sales. Rather, it's yet another incentive to buy an Office 365 Home Premium subscription. The $99 a year subscription lets you use Office 2013 on up to five PCs, and those licenses float; you can decommission old PCs and move licenses to new ones as necessary. That's the carrot; the stick is the price hike and additional restrictions on perpetual licenses.

The problem is that there are plenty of customers who reject the subscription model out of hand, either because they find an overt rental model offensive, or because they don't place much value in having the current version of the software and hence find occasional perpetual licenses to be more cost effective.?The retail license change doesn't fundamentally alter that calculus for those users. It just makes clear that Microsoft doesn't really?like?such users.

So they probably won't flock to Office 365. What they might well do instead is download LibreOffice 4 or switch to Google Docs?moves that hurt Microsoft far more than simply moving an Office install from an old computer to a new one. Those enthusiasts could take the mass market with them. It's happened before, with Firefox and Chrome. It can happen again, to Office. Licensing changes that alienate users make that only more likely to happen.

The time for marriage equality is here | MinnPost

A massive Valentine's Day rally at the Minnesota State Capitol, which included more than a hundred clergy and religious leaders calling for the state to allow same-sex couples to marry, is no longer surprising.

Sen. John Marty

Sen. John Marty

Times have changed.

In 1997, when the Minnesota Legislature passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), to "defend" marriage against same-sex couples, only a handful of legislators voted against it, and even fewer were willing to speak against it. Back then we received stacks of letters, many filled with hateful comments, condemning us for supporting the right of all people to marry the person they love.

Over time, there has been growing recognition that LGBT families deserve fair treatment. Even the strongest proponents of the constitutional amendment have changed their strategy and rhetoric in response to shifting public opinion. Ten years ago, Michele Bachmann's legislation would have amended the constitution to ban not only marriages, but also civil unions. Now, less than a decade later, the amendment's authors declined to put a civil union ban in their proposal, knowing how unpopular that would be.

Shortly before the election, a gay TV reporter asked the spokeswoman for Minnesota for Marriage, the pro-amendment group, "How is my relationship less valid than others?" She responded, "[It is] certainly not less valid. ... We understand that same-sex couples can love each other and commit to each other." This from the spokeswoman leading the fight against marriage equality! That's a huge change.

Because of our faith, not in spite of it

Opponents of marriage equality often speak of religious "truths" to make their case. My religious faith teaches that we are to treat others the way we would want to be treated. My church, like many others, promotes making a sacred, lifelong bond between couples who love each other. It is because of our faith, not in spite of it, that we promote marriage and work to strengthen families of same-sex couples just as with heterosexual ones. For us, the countless scripture passages on love and commitment, on honesty and fidelity, on compassion and understanding, and on the importance of parents caring for each other and their children are more compelling than the handful of verses that have been used by others to argue against homosexuality.

The religious leaders who came to the Capitol on Valentine's Day asking for marriage equality aren't asking others to share their religious beliefs; they respect the beliefs of those who disagree. They don't want the state to interfere with the religious beliefs of any of its people. Just as a church or religious denomination that objects to same-sex marriage has the right to refuse to solemnize those marriages, a church or religious denomination that believes in the value of same-sex marriage should have the right to solemnize those marriages.

The current law banning marriage doesn't stop same-sex couples from falling in love, from making commitments to each other, from sharing their lives together, from raising children, or from growing old together. Their love and commitment is a wonderful thing and healthy for society. There is no rational reason for denying their families the same rights and responsibilities that other married people have, including the right to pension and Social Security survivor's benefits, the right to family and medical leave, and numerous other benefits and obligations.

They've been waiting a long time

Many of these couples have been partners for more than the three decades that my wife Connie and I have been married, yet they still do not receive the same legal protections and rights that we have. They have been waiting for a long time.

I am confident that we will pass marriage equality legislation this session. Some would rather that we postpone the issue for a few years, but justice requires that we provide equality for LGBT families, and that we do so now.

Human rights for any minority should never be subject to popular opinion. Even so, the legislators who believed it should be determined by a statewide vote, got their way. And they lost.

We will pass legislation allowing all Minnesotans to marry the person they love ? not because the majority rejected the amendment last fall, but because it is the right thing to do. The point here is that the opponents can no longer claim to have strong backing from the public.

Conversations helped build understanding

The conversation about marriage equality that began last year in communities around the state helped build understanding of the value of all families. Passing legislation to allow marriage for all couples will not stop this conversation. Year after year, Minnesotans will continue gaining understanding and respect for those who are different from us.

Now, we can act. This year, we will finally give all Minnesotans the freedom to marry the person they love. And that's a beautiful thing.

John Marty, DFL-Roseville, is a state senator. He first published this article in his newsletter, "To the Point!" which is published by the Apple Pie Alliance.

Russian meteorite images caught on dashboard cameras

MOSCOW (Reuters) - It is no coincidence the first videos that captured the images of a meteorite breaking apart over central Russia on Friday were shot from drivers' dashboard cameras.

The small video cameras, fixed to the dashboard or rear view mirror of a car to film oncoming traffic and the road ahead, are immensely popular in Russia because of motorists' fears about the corruption, violence and insurance fraud schemes that can make driving in the country a nightmare.

"It's the little thing that can prove the truth," said Dmitry Isaev, 35, a Moscow motorist with a dashboard camera in his car. "There are so many conflicts on the road, and it's often the one thing that can prove your point to the police."

Dashboard camera footage appeared remarkably quickly on the Internet and television on Friday showing the meteorite hurtling through the sky and exploding over central Russia.

Footage shot on the cameras is already an Internet staple although usually showing feats such as motorists driving half-wrecked cars, running other automobiles off the road or, in one case, threatening other drivers with an axe.

One video that spread across the Internet last year was a five-minute montage that showed bypassers throwing themselves against cars on purpose in what it said were attempts to collect money through insurance. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=c12_1349902324

"Policemen tell people that if they want their case to stand up, it's best to get a dashboard camera," said Isaev.

Dashboard cameras have also produced the first images of other dramatic incidents, including a Russian airliner sliding off the runway in late December and smashing onto a highway near Moscow, killing five people.

Russian roads have a bad reputation. According to Trafficsafe, a British-based road safety organization, 28,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in Russia in 2012.

It said 13,000 accidents were caused by drink driving.

The popularity of dashboard cameras may also be connected with popular tales of corruption among Russian traffic police, regularly cited by independent pollster Levada as one of the least trusted institutions in the country.

Most Russian motorists can say how big a bribe they would expect to pay to escape punishment for traffic violations - from not wearing a seat belt, to running a red light.

Russia was ranked 133rd place in the world for corruption in 2012 by Transparency International, on a par with Honduras and Guyana.

Iran mourns slain senior military commander

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Prominent Iranian politicians and clerics led mourners at a funeral Thursday for a senior commander of the country's powerful Revolutionary Guards who was killed this week while traveling from Syria to Lebanon, local media said.

The semiofficial Fars news agency identified the slain commander as Gen. Hassan Shateri, and said he was in charge of reconstruction projects in southern Lebanon. Shateri was killed on the road linking Damascus with Beirut on Wednesday, it said, without specifying whether the killing took place on Lebanese or Syrian soil.

It was not immediately clear who killed Shateri, although Guards spokesman Gen. Ramazan Sharif was quoted by Fars as saying "mercenaries and supporters" of Israel were responsible.

Shateri's death points to the support that Iran, the region's Shiite power, provides to both Syrian President Bashar Assad and the Lebanese militant Shiite movement Hezbollah. Tehran lends political and military support to Damascus, a close ally, as well as Hezbollah, Iran's proxy in the region.

The Syrian regime and Hezbollah are both critical to Iran's Middle East strategy, and Tehran has pledged to continue its support for Assad as he tries to fend off a relentless and bloody rebellion aimed at toppling his family's 40-year rule.

Tehran counts on Syria as a bridge to Hezbollah ? a dominant political force in Lebanon ? and an important foothold for the Guard.

In September, the Guard's top commander, Jafari, made a rare public acknowledgment that the elite unit has had high-level advisers in Lebanon and Syria for a long time, but was not more specific. Jafari's comments marked the clearest indication of Iran's direct assistance to its main Arab allies.

Thursday's funeral for Shateri took place at a mosque in north Tehran, Fars and ISNA said.

Several high-ranking Iranian figures attended the service, including Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, Guard chief Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari and the head of the Guard's Quds Force, Gen. Ghasem Soleimani. Senior clerics, such as Ayatollah Ali Saeedi, the representative of Iran's supreme leader to the Guards, also took part.

Footage of the service broadcast on state TV showed footage of mourners carrying aloft a coffin.

Fars said Shateri was a veteran of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, and served in Afghanistan before going to Lebanon. He is to be buried Friday in his hometown of Semnan, some 150 kilometers (90 miles) east of Tehran.

Lebanese news reports provided a similar account of the killing but a different name.

Al-Manar TV, which is owned by Hezbollah, identified the dead man as Houssam Khosh Nweis. It said he was the director of the Iranian Council for Reconstruction in Lebanon, and that he had lived in the country since the end of the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

The station gave no further details.

The difference in the name could not immediately be reconciled, but Iranian military officials in Lebanon often work under an assumed name because their presence in the country is not publicized by Hezbollah.

Lebanese security officials told The Associated Press there was no indication that the Iranian official was killed on Lebanese soil. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Study shows anti-copper drug might prevent the spread of cancer to organs

An anti-copper drug compound that disables the ability of bone marrow cells from setting up a "home" in organs to receive and nurture migrating cancer tumor cells has shown surprising benefit in one of the most difficult-to-treat forms of cancer?high-risk triple-negative breast cancer.

The median survival for metastatic triple-negative breast cancer patients is historically nine months. However, results of a new phase II clinical trial conducted by researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College and reported in the Annals of Oncology shows if patients at high-risk of relapse with no current visible breast cancer are copper depleted, it results in a prolonged period of time with no cancer recurrence. In fact, only two of 11 study participants with a history of advanced triple-negative breast cancer relapsed within 10 months after using the anti-copper drug, tetrathiomolybdate (TM).

"These study findings are very promising and potentially a very exciting advance in our efforts to help women who are at the highest risk of recurrence," says the study's senior investigator, Dr. Linda Vahdat, director of the Breast Cancer Research Program, chief of the Solid Tumor Service and professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Vahdat says four of the study participants with a history of metastatic triple-negative breast cancer have had long-term benefit remaining disease free for between three and five and a half years.

"The anti-copper compound appears to be keeping tumors that want to spread in a dormant state," reports Dr. Vahdat, who is also medical oncologist at the Iris Cantor Women's Health Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "We believe one of the important ways it works is by affecting the tumor microenvironment, specifically the bone marrow-derived cells that are critical for metastasis progression."

In addition, study participants with other forms of high-risk for relapse breast cancers?either stage 3 or stage 4?without evidence of disease after treatment have also fared well. The progression-free survival rate among these 29 patients in the study has been 85 percent, to date.

"As good as these interim findings look to us, we cannot talk about significant benefit until we compare TM treatment to other therapies," she says. Dr. Vahdat expects to launch a phase III randomized clinical trial in the near future.

This research is a report of the first 40 patients. The clinical trial, which began in 2007, has been expanded many times and now includes 60 patients, more than half of who have triple-negative breast cancer.

Deplete Copper to Prevent Cancer Spread

New discoveries in the science of metastasis and examination of the body's utilization of copper to promote cancer spread led to this clinical trial.

Investigators at Weill Cornell, including some of this study's co-authors, have contributed to the recent understanding of the role bone marrow cells play in promoting metastasis. They previously found that a collection of bone marrow-derived cells, which include VEGFR1+ hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs), prepare a site in distant organs to accept cancer cells. HPCs also recruit endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), among others, to activate an "angiogenic switch" that establish blood vessels at the site to feed newly migrated cancer cells.

Breast cancer research studies conducted at Weill Cornell have also found that immediately prior to cancer relapse, levels of EPCs and HPCs rise significantly further, suggesting that the EPC target of the copper depletion approach is one that makes sense.

"Breast tumors want to move to specific organs, and these EPCs and HPCs cells leave a 'popcorn trail' for cancer cells to follow, as well as provide the building blocks for blood vessels to greet them as they arrive," Dr. Vahdat says.

Copper is critical to mobilizing these cells. Copper is essential to the metastatic process. It is a key component of enzymes that help turn on angiogenesis in the tumor microenvironment, and it also appears to play a role in directing cancer cell migration and invasion, according to researchers.

TM is a copper chelation compound used to treat Wilson's disease, a hereditary copper metabolism disorder, and has been studied in phase I and phase II clinical trials for a number of disorders. Animal studies have demonstrated that depleting copper decreases proliferation of EPCs, as well as blood vessel formation and tumor growth.

Dr. Vahdat's study is the first human clinical trial to utilize a copper depletion strategy to modulate EPCs in breast cancer patients with an extraordinarily high risk of relapse from hidden residual disease. Most of the studies in other solid tumors with visible advanced disease have been disappointing, say researchers.

Despite improvements in breast cancer therapy, there is significant risk of relapse in a high-risk subset of patients. The risk of relapse in stage 3 patients is 50-75 percent over five years, and patients with stage 4 breast cancer always recur. Triple-negative breast cancer patients have a poorer prognosis even when diagnosed in early disease stages.

"These triple-negative patients represent a substantial proportion of metastatic breast cancer patients," says Dr. Vahdat. "These are the patients that need the most attention, which is why we have focused most of the resources of our Metastases Research Program on this problem."

In the study, researchers found that 75 percent of patients achieved the copper depletion target using TM after one month of therapy, and that copper depletion was most efficient (91 percent) in patients with triple-negative tumors, compared to other tumor types (41 percent). In copper-depleted patients only, there was a significant reduction in EPCs, and the 10-month relapse-free survival was 85 percent. In addition, TM was found to be safe and well-tolerated in patients.

The study shows copper depletion appears to inhibit the production, release, and mobilization of EPCs from the bone marrow, leading to a suppressed angiogenic switch and tumor dormancy.

"There are a lot of cancer experts at Weill Cornell working very hard to understand this precise mechanism, define the clinical benefit in this ongoing copper depletion drug clinical trial, and determine its future study," says Dr. Vahdat. "Keeping cancer dormant is what we all want for our patients?especially triple-negative breast cancer patients at highest risk of recurrence."

The Not-So-Sunny Side of This Hot Energy Source

Solar power, for good reason, has a lot of fans. ?It's hip, it's cool, it's trendy...and it's green,? according to the Australian solar company Energy Matters. And it?s certainly true that producing solar power is far cleaner than fossil fuels which are one of the main causes of pollution and global warming.

But like every good hero, the solar industry has its kryptonite. In this case, it?s the hazardous waste that?s created by the production of solar panels.

ABC News recently reported that while government incentives have been a boon to the solar industry, the millions of panels being manufactured are also producing millions of pounds of polluted sludge and contaminated water. ?In many cases, a toxic sludge is created when metals and other toxins are removed from water used in the manufacturing process. If a company doesn't have its own treatment equipment, then it will send contaminated water to be stored at an approved dump.?

Putting aside the idea of transporting a lot of toxic sludge from one place to another?most plants don?t have on-site treatment equipment?a number of scientists have pointed out that the transport of solar waste isn?t being factored into the product?s carbon footprint score, which measures the amount of greenhouse gases produced during a product?s manufacturing.

Dustin Mulvaney, an assistant professor of environmental studies at San Jos? State University, told TakePart that he?s been doing life cycle analyses and carbon footprints of energy technologies since he was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, after which he started a sustainability consulting firm, EcoShift. ?My particular interest in solar came through work with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition,? he said.

?Approximating the greenhouse gas emissions associated with any product requires gathering information about direct energy use, embodied energy?the energy it takes to make some of the key inputs and infrastructure?and the carbon intensity of the various energy inputs,? said Mulvaney. ?Coal, for example, has a higher carbon intensity than natural gas.??

Asked if knowing more about the hazardous waste created by the solar industry might influence consumers even though solar power is still a cleaner option than fossil fuels, Mulvaney said, ?Solar power is an order of magnitude cleaner than coal and fracked natural gas.?

And, ?If consumers know more about the hazardous waste emissions associated with solar manufacturing, there could be pressure on companies to reduce their emissions or seek onsite treatment options where opportunities exist. More efficient use of chemicals ultimately could reduce the carbon footprint of solar as well as reduce manufacturing costs, which is the primary obstacle to more widespread photovoltaics adoption.?

SolarPowerIsTheFuture.com states that, ?The sun is the world's largest power plant. It provides more energy to the earth in one hour than that produced by all nations in a year.?

We just need to make sure that the journey from the sun to a solar-powered home remains as clean as possible.

Are you surprised to hear about the hazardous waste and carbon footprint created by solar panel production?

Run Android apps on your Microsoft Surface Pro with BlueStacks

It took some effort to purchase my 128GB Surface Pro, but I now have it setup with VPN and all of my engineering apps so it is my first super portable computer that doesn't limit me on the go. I just read this morning over on the Android Central website that I can now also run Android apps on my Surface Pro with the free BlueStacks software. While there are plenty of my favorite apps in the Windows Store that have the Metro UI, I appreciate the ability to be able to use some of the apps I already purchased on my Android devices.

Angry Birds Star Wars is available on all platforms, but without a central login system you have to choose just one or else you have to play through on each device. I enjoy playing on my Note II and have held back paying $4.99 for the Windows 8 version. With BlueStacks I should be able to play the Android version I already bought, but I will still have to start over on my Surface Pro.

As I look at my Note II, Nexus 7, and Surface Pro, I can see there are still Android apps I want to run on the Surface Pro so BlueStacks may be quite useful. For example, I plan to test TripIt, Alaska Airlines, USAA Bank, Plume (Twitter apps on Windows 8 still need lots of work), Flipboard, Pocket, Google Play Magazines (Nook does a good job with mags too), Amazon MP3, Play Music, and Google Drive. Many of these services can be accessed via the full web browser on Windows 8, but often a dedicated app has a better user interface and is more enjoyable to use.

What apps would you use with BlueStacks on a Surface Pro?

Google's Schmidt, big stock sale and taxes

Today, I've got more answers to readers' tax questions.

Q: Steve M. asks: "Last week I heard that Eric Schmidt of Google was going to sell approximately $2.5 billion of his shares. The tax burden on that sale must be enormous! Are there special ways that people in those positions have of avoiding taxes ... that us normal people either don't know about or don't have access to?"

A: People in Schmidt's position reduce (but don't entirely avoid) taxes because the vast majority of their income is taxed as a capital gain rather than ordinary income.

"Salaries get taxed when you earn them. Capital gains only get taxed when you sell, and they get taxed at a lower rate. That's a benefit in and of itself, and it's in the law," says Lee Sheppard, a contributing editor with Tax Analysts.

Google disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Friday that Schmidt, Google's executive chairman (and former chief executive), planned to sell about 3.2 million shares of Class A stock, or about 42 percent of his total holdings of Class A and B common stock, over the next year "for individual asset diversification and liquidity."

Schmidt is selling under a Rule 10b5-1 program, which lets executives sell at predetermined prices or intervals to avoid accusations of illegal insider trading. Such programs are common among top executives, including Schmidt. "He has been selling a significant number of shares through 10b5-1 programs for a decade now," says Jonathan Moreland, director of research with InsiderInsights.com.

Schmidt joined Google in 2001, about three years before it went public. Tax experts say the cost basis in his stock, or what he paid for it, is probably very low, which means that most of his sales proceeds will be profit and taxed at the long-term capital gains rate.

For someone in Schmidt's tax bracket, that rate is 20 percent this year, up from 15 percent last year. Schmidt will also owe a new 3.8 percent Medicare tax on most of his capital gain, something that didn't exist last year. But that combined rate - 23.8 percent - is still well below the top rate of 39.6 percent that applies to salaries and other ordinary income.

Schmidt will also owe 13.3 percent on most of his gain to the state of California, assuming he is a California resident. (Public records and news reports say he lives in Atherton, although Google would not confirm his residence. Even if he claimed not to live in California, the Franchise Tax Board would argue that he does, Sheppard says.)

Consultants are always pitching tax avoidance schemes to wealthy people, Sheppard says, but "they don't work."

In the late 1990s, consultants, including some of the nation's top accounting firms, were marketing schemes designed to let clients avoid tax on the sale of appreciated assets. They went by nicknames such as Son of BOSS and typically involved creating paper losses to offset real capital gains. The IRS went after such schemes with a vengeance and effectively shut them down.

Q: Pauline J. asks, "If I paid my property management company to manage the rental house I own, do I need to issue a 1099-MISC form for the monthly management fees they deduct from the rent collected? Their fees were more than $1,000 in 2012."

A: No. If you own rental property, you don't have to file a 1099 because you are not a trade or business, says Rich Gunn, a partner with accounting firm Burr Pilger & Mayer. If the property management company hires someone to paint the walls or cut the grass at your rental property, it might have to file a 1099 depending on how much it paid and whether it paid an individual or contracting corporation, says Gunn.

Q: Jim T. asks, "If my wife and I own shares of a stock fund in joint ownership, and switch the ownership to individual, is it a taxable event?"

A: No. Transferring property between married spouses is not a taxable event, nor does it trigger any gift-tax issues, Gunn says.

Transferring property between two people who are not legally married in the eyes of the IRS (including same-sex couples) also does not trigger income taxes, but "you might have to file a gift tax return depending on how much you give," he adds. The return is for reporting purposes and generally does not result in a gift tax.

Q: Maria Y. asks, "I am a widow who is 55 years old. I have owned a house in San Francisco with my late husband for more than 20 years. The house was in our living trust. Since my husband passed away, my lawyer allocated 10 percent of the house into my living trust, and 90 percent in the estate trust, or trust B. I read your article about how seniors can sell the primary house in San Francisco and buy a new one in Santa Clara County and transfer the property tax to Santa Clara County. Since my house is located mostly in the estate trust, do I have this privilege?"

A: Under Proposition 60, California homeowners 55 and older get a one-time chance to sell their primary residence and transfer its property-tax assessment to a new one, but the market value of the new home generally must be equal to or less than the market value of the old home. Also, the new home must be in the same county as the old one or in one of eight counties (including Santa Clara) that accept incoming transfers of property values. For details, see my June 19 column at http://tinyurl.com/bwgzm9f

The Board of Equalization answers a lot of questions about Prop. 60 transfers on its website, but not this one, so I asked the board for an answer.

The response: "For property tax purposes, the assessor looks through the trust to identify the present beneficial owner of the trust property. Since the wife is the present beneficial owner of her trust and assuming that she is the present beneficiary of her husband's trust (probably as a life estate holder), she would be considered the owner of the real property and can transfer the base-year value under Section 69.5." For details on this, see www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/pdf/200_0075.pdf
