Fitness for Students: 4 Ways to Work Out on a College Schedule

Every college students dreads the freshman fifteen. With intense study schedules, way too many pizza runs, late night partying and bland cafeteria food, students can have a hard time not gaining a few pounds making the transition to college life. But, the hardest thing about maintaining your health in college is finding the time. Here are some ways to structure your schedule in college to include much-needed exercise and still have time for both work and play:

1. Pick one time to exercise and stick to it.

The problem most college students have with finding time to exercise is adjusting to a constantly shifting course schedule. Students have classes at all hours of the day, and it?s difficult to find several days per week that allow one given time frame to get in your exercise. On top of that, most students have extracurricular and social activities that change throughout the week. One of the best ways to combat these schedule changes is to make a plan and get serious about it. Get a planner or calendar and? write down all the classes and activities that you know you have scheduled. Choose 4 days every week that you will designate as gym days and write them in to the planner. Schedule everything else around these times, and don?t budge or you could risk completely scrapping your plan.

2. Study while you cardio.

Even though getting to the gym takes plenty of time, there are ways to combine your responsibilities. Try taking your books along with you and reading while on an exercise bike, treadmill, or elliptical machine. If you have access to audio copies of your class lectures or audiobook versions of your reading materials, try importing them to your phone or iPod and listen as you do cardio or lift weights. Adding this to your workout system gives you no excuse to skip the gym just because your work has piled up.

3. Work out at home if you need to.

Sometimes there are just those days when you simply can?t make yourself get to the gym. Whether it?s a huge downpour or a bit of a cold, you have to give yourself a pass once in a while when leaving the house just feels like a non option. But, if you can, you should still make sure to stay on your exercise schedule. Losing a day or two of workouts is akin to backtracking about a week, and, if you have fitness goals, keeping up the momentum is really important. Working out at home is completely possible, and even 20 minutes or so can really make a difference. To supplement your goals, buy some free weights, an exercise ball, and a mat so you can exercise thoroughly in the house.

4. Use study breaks for exercise.

If you?ve missed a day in your schedule or are feeling the pressures of finals season upon you, then exercising on the fly can do wonders. When you?re cramming 24/7, using study breaks for exercise can be an excellent way to refresh and stay healthy during exams. Try using a short 30 minute break to do some power walking. Or, use an hour break to work out at the house or head to the gym to do 45 minutes of weight training. These kinds of breaks are important so you don?t backtrack on your goals, and they can also get the blood flowing in your brain again, so you can study harder when you head back to the books.
