Women's Hoops Shoots to Rebound in - Gettysburg College Athletics

GETTYSBURG, Pa. ? A young but experienced group of players will look to lead the Gettysburg College women?s basketball team back its winning ways in 2012-13.
?
With a 12-13 record last season, the Bullets finished below the .500 mark for just the fifth time in 23 seasons on under Head Coach Mike Kirkpatrick. The squad also missed the Centennial Conference playoffs for just the second time in the last eight seasons, finishing 10-10 in conference play.
?
?We?re not quite sure of what our expectations will be because of our big losses from last year?s team,? said Kirkpatrick, Gettysburg?s all-time winningest coach with a career record of 326-245. ?We lost a lot of rebounding, a lot of points, and great leadership. It?s going to be difficult to replace that.
?
?However,? he continued, ?we do have some key returners back such as our guards and one of our forwards who played a lot of minutes last year. So we expect to be very competitive and our goal is to get back into the playoffs and hopefully do well.?
?
The team lost three of its top four scorers in Alyssa Oursler, Sara Kinsley, and Lauren Dadigan. Both Ourlser and Kinsley were named All-Centennial Conference last winter with Kinsley also finishing as Gettysburg?s all-time leader in blocked shots.
?
Kirkpatrick has no seniors on the roster, instead relying on a veteran group of juniors. All five have served pivotal roles as starters and reserves over the last two seasons.
?
Junior Caroline Murphy is the team?s top returning scorer and rebounder, averaging 8.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game primarily coming off the bench last season. The 6-1 forward was also the team?s best free-throw shooter, hitting 85.4 percent of her attempts from the stripe.
?
Junior guards Alyssa Isler, Katie Earley, and Cori Younghans give Kirkpatrick a reliable and consistent backcourt to relay on. Each member of the trio appeared in all 25 games last season, recording similar numbers in points, rebounds, assists, and steals.

Katie Earley ranked third on the team with 41 assists last season.

Gettysburg?s remaining junior veteran is guard Rianna Doane. Doane will be looking to return to her freshman form after spending the majority of last season recovering from a knee injury. As a first-year, she averaged 6.9 points per game while leading the team with 25 three-pointers and 53 steals.
?
Kirkpatrick also expects bigger contributions from sophomore forwards Jenna Swope, Samantha Pagel, and Danielle Bernini. All three are versatile players that can contribute in the post and step out and shoot from mid-range.
?
Newcomers could play an integral role in Gettysburg?s game plan this winter. Freshman Kim Ryan will add depth to the backcourt, while classmates Emily Duggan, Jessica Porter, and Abby Dugan?will aim to contribute in the post. Junior Cari McMaster joins the team after competing for the Bullets? track and field team last spring.
?
?When we have everyone out there and working together,? said Kirkpatrick, ?it seems like we have a good group as far as chemistry. They seem to be working pretty hard and the hustle and effort seems to be there. We?re anticipating that will be maintained throughout the year.?
?
Gettysburg maintained a strong defensive presence in 2011-12, ranking second in the conference in field-goal percentage defense (.315) and ranking third in scoring defense (52.0 ppg). Kirkpatrick expects his team to maintain that defensive stance, while continuing to improve its rebounding and offensive flow.
?
?I think our biggest thing is we need to rebound better and take better care of the ball,? he said. ?We felt our defense last year was pretty good and we?re anticipating that to be the same this year.?
?
Gettysburg opens the year at the University of Marymount Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 16-17. The team jumps right into its 20-game conference schedule after that, facing the top three teams from last season?s standings in its first four games, including a visit to Muhlenberg College on Nov. 20. ?
?
Kirkpatrick has no seniors and no returning all-conference performers, but he has high hopes that the new leadership will bring the team together at the right time this season.
?
?We have a group of young women who seem to work very well both on and off the court. They seem anticipate each other?s needs and genuinely care about each other. I think that makes it fun for the coaches.??
